Today I managed to grab a break in the rainy weather to wash the car and try out some Swissvax Onyx wax on the bonnet.
My normal goto wax is DoDo Juice Blue Velvet Pro and Collinte 915, but I’ve been wanting to try Swissvax waxes for a while now. After a bit of deliberation I’ve decided to try both Onyx and Best of Show. I bought a sample pot of Onyx and will be getting some BoS very soon. At this stage both will be trialled on the bonnet only for a few weeks each, and then I will decide which one will be used on the whole car, if I am sufficiently impressed by either of them.
Swissvax Onyx is a standard wax for all paintwork types with 30% by volume of pure Brazilian Grade One Carnauba.
Prep - first I throughly washed the car - double snow foam and 3BW. Car was then dried off using Metro Vac n Blo and drying towels. Tyres dressed and tailpipes polished.
Onto the preparation of the bonnet for the Onyx. I removed all existing wax from the bonnet, using DoDo Juice Lime Prime Lite, followed by Gtechniq Panel Wipe for good measure. This left the bonnet perfectly clean and ready for my base sealant.

Sealant - I applied 1 coat of my usual sealant - Poorboys Ex-P and left it for 30 minutes, then buffed off.

Wax - next up was the Swissvax Onyx.

I applied a first thin coat using a foam wax applicator and left it for 5 minutes, then buffed off with a microfibre. I then followed this up with a second coat of Onyx, again leaving for 5 minutes and buffing off to a high shine.
The wax is a cross between a paste and a hard wax in terms of consistency. It’s the colour of mango flesh, which is apt as it smells like a tropical fruit salad. I’m not normally seduced by the smell of detailing stuff, but have to say the smell was divine. Made me think of summer holidays!
Onyx is an absolute dream to apply. I was totally stunned how easily it went on . It’s so silky, just glides over the surface. Nothing I’ve ever tried before has felt this effortless to apply. Following the application instructions, I was careful not to let it dry and left it for 5 mins only each time. As easy as it went on, it buffed off with equal ease. A lovely, lovely wax on and off.

Results - the result is impressive - a very nice velvety finish and good depth and gloss. Time will tell how it performs in terms of durability and longevity.

Beading/sheeting video - I did a brief video of water behaviour on the Onyx, and pretty good result for wax. Water was easily repelled and ran off swiftly. A few beads were left on the bonnet at the end but what great great bead they were!

Bonnet beading shots - the beading on the bonnet is beautiful. Nice pinched beads. Can only imaging what it will be like on the roof!

I really hope that it lasts a reasonable amount of time and holds up well, because the finish is superb. Even more excited to try the Best of Show next as that has a higher carnauba content at 51% by volume.
And after all that, it started raining!

Looks great, knew you'd like it!
-
Great write up Rebecca, looks great. Thing is you car already looked stunning before you waxed it.
The beading looks top draw too. I must admit I'm a sucker for a good bit of beading.
I looking forward to trying a few different waxes this year.
-
Cheers guys.
I'm in love with the Onyx beading! 😍 Bring on the rain, oh wait, it's already here.
-
That's the problem with these tests, they all have the same outcome:
Booth11 cleans car > car looks stunning.

It's not what you do, it's how you do it that counts.

Coming in Episode 37, Booth11 uses Fairy liquid and an old sponge.

Don't hold your breath........cos it ain't ever gonna happen
That'll be the sequel that NEVER gets made!

I use SwissVax Sheild and Zuffenhausen on my Boxster. Swear by the stuff after having been converted a while back.
A mate of mine put some Crystal Rock on my old black GTD - it was still beading after 5 months!! All of them smell amazing too!
-
It's all about the big pots though Booth11!

As this is my first foray into Swissvax world decided to err on the side of caution and get sample pot first ahead of shelling out for full size. On the strength of it so far, I expect big pots will be winging their way to my house very soon. Got sample of Best of Show coming soon and I anticipate there'll be more SV stuff to come. :afro:
And agree - the smell is out of this world.
-
It really is good stuff... Crazy expensive, and I'm sure you could get products as good for less, but I've never heard a bad word said about SV, except the cost..
I think BoS doesn't last as well as some as its a show wax, but as you said, SV stuff is designed to be layered, so I tend to layer a tough one like Shield under a shiny one.
Unless you go for Crystal Rock which is both, but £700!!!!

That's a good tip about topping off with Shield. I have looked at that.
I would love to go for Crystal Rock but it would end in divorce.

Hi,
I'm considering going the full Swissvax route including a professional Swissvax detail upon collection of my new Golf R.
How are you finding the Swissvax so far?
-
My biggest complaint with Swissvax is its durability, especially if you wash your car regularly.
I collect my A45 on Friday which I'm going to coat up with a colour charged wax to see how that competes (DJ Purple Haze I think)
I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Hi,
The Swissvax Onyx and Best of Show, are beautiful in terms of finish, lovely deep gloss and great depth to a dark paint. The Best of Show just edges it for me. And they are a dream to apply and buff off, easier than any other wax I have used. But, here's the downside - it doesn't last much more than a month, and the more frequently you wash your car, the quicker it will diminish.
The DoDo Juice colour charged waxes, especially the Pro Editions of Purple Haze and Blue Velvet last 3 months and that's with weekly/fortnightly washing. Best applied on top of a base sealant to further improve their longevity. IMO, you can't do much better than these.
But, because I really like the finish of the Swissvax wax - I'm quite happy to apply that a bit more frequently especially in the summer months.
Exactly what will be used in the Swissvax pro detail?
-
I think the thing with Swissvax (and I'm only going on my own experience) is that they all: Smell nice, are easy to apply, are REALLY shiny. As you spend more money, then they last longer. The Crystal Rock sets very hard and lasts a long time, especially on a very clean base.
(and I wash my car A LOT - often twice a week).

I'd better start saving for some Crystal Rick then.

It was the only thing on our old black GTD7 that kept it looking cleaner for longer..

£795 for 200ml!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!

£795 for 200ml!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!
WTF indeed, but the 50ml sample pot is a mere £220 and you get about 4 coats out of that so bargain really.

That's actually true if you compare it to some Zymol waxes with cost £2500 - £7000. But even with those wild prices you get Zymol refills for life with some of their waxes. So if you were a pro detailer working on a good turnover of some high end cars, charging £££ for a detail, and you only ever pay out for the initial first pot of wax, the rest being free, it actually may be quite cost effective over the years.

I see,as tempted as I am by that I think I will stick with my Do do juice stuff for the time being!

You can't get much better than DoDo Juice wax for the perfect balance of quality, finish, price, durability and longevity. It ticks every box, and I have (and still am) been extremely happy with it for last 3 years, but like to flirt with other things and felt it was time to try the expensive stuff. But that's where it ends, I will not be going down the ££££ Zymol route, not unless I either inherit megabucks (highly unlikely) or win the lottery (even less likely since I don't actually do it, lol). DoDo is always there waiting in the wings for when I have no more organs to sell to fund my wax habit.

Looking at your car Rebecca, I don't think you need the mega bucks stuff, you are doing just fine with the "cheapo" gear!
