Hi folks i'm new to site and to owning mk3 gti , i have the 5k limit problem although it does rev to 6k when it feels like it , i bought a new dizzy cap rotor and hall sensor but i don't know how to change the hall sensor

hey dj. to change the hall sender you will need to drill through the pin that goes through the bottom gear and then punch it out. be very careful you don't enlarge the holes the pin goes through or it will be scrap. after the pin is out the gear and a thin washer should slide off. then you pull the top section of dizzy out(keep an eye out for another thin washer up there). change hall sender and rebuild dizzy using a new roll/tension pin.

would a faulty hall sensor explain the 5k limiter that lets it rev to 6k once in a while or will it be the timing of dizzie out

was just out in the car the now and two times it revved all the way to 6k must be a hall sensor issue??

If it only revs to 5k there is a fault stored in the ECU. Read what that says.....
Also if it revs to 5k and doesn't stall you will have an AGG or AGU engine, the hall sender on them is only one of two that monitor rpm and engine position. You could also have a fault crankshaft sensor.
If you replace the dizzy you will need to adjust the ignition timing again, for that you need to put ECU into basic setting (so it does not alter ignition timing) and a strobe gun.

Get VCDS, a cheap handheld reader won't be good enough as you can't control measuring blocks (which you'll need for ignition adjustment). Or get someone with VCDS in Scotland to help you out as it is about 250 quid....

Then I'd recommend to get a genuine VCDS HEX+CAN or VAG CAN PRO +K interface.
