Title: U281 / U480
Post by: jimmydub on 08 January 2016, 18:41
I'm sure this has been covered numerous times, but after searching here, and google, i'm still not 100% on the right fault reader. they're only cheap i know but i would rather get it right first time around.

Ive got a 8V '96 GTI - the diagnostic connector is 16 pin and rectangular.
From the images i've seen it looks as though these fault readers have a 'trapezoid' shaped plug; does this matter? will it still fit?

ive also read that to be OBD2 the connector should have locations 4, 5, 7, 15, and 16 populated - mine has all of the above except number 5. Does this matter?

And lastly, if one of them is the right one, then which is it? I understand the U480 is a newer model?

thanks!

That should work fine on a mk3. I've had the U281 reader in the boot of numerous cars over the past 10yrs or so it's helped out loads of times.
Like you say this is just the newer version.

I can't believe how cheap they are now! http://www.amazon.co.uk/CAN-Bus-Trouble-Diagnose-Diagnostic-Scanner/dp/B001CBBY7O

U480 is for 2001 onwards

I have both as my 1999 Alhambra uses the 281

My wifes 2004 Leon uses the 480.
