Hi all,
This is my first post on a Golf forum, as I am in need of both your help and your opinion.
I am looking to buy a VW Golf GTD, Mk7. The one I am looking at is here:-
http://www.amanahprestige.com/vw-golf-gtd-dsg-in-essex-5297183 (http://www.amanahprestige.com/vw-golf-gtd-dsg-in-essex-5297183)
I'd like to know what your thoughts are on the car overall, the Santiago alloys (as I've heard these are prone to buckling) and if there are any other vital considerations I should look out for. Is the Price right for that car & mileage? To me it looks about right, but then again my eye is untrained.
I'm new to the Mk7 World, so therefore any help from existing owners would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys.

Plenty of these for sale right now so you will have plenty of choice although that car looks clean with some extras on it  but I'm sure you will get loads of feedback on here
-
Looks very nice. It's certainly the right colour as far as I'm concerned.
It seems to be very well speced and it appears to have pro nav system.
Keyless entry too.
It would be nicer if you could get it even cheaper though
-
WOW, fast replies - thanks both.
At the risk of sounding annoying, what is the Pro Nav system and how can one tell if it has it?
I'd love to get it cheaper. I'm going to see it this weekend with the Mrs. Provided we both like it, I'll try and negotiate a better price and strike a deal.
Colour does look sweet, that was the first thing that drew me in to the advert.
-
You can see NavPro in the photos...
I'd thoroughly validate everything the dealer says about it though - for example he doesn't mention NavPro, yet its in the photo. He mentions all sorts of other costed extras, are they actually there?
The headline says 2 owners, but later it says 1.
If what is written about the spec, the one owner, the mileage is all true, then this is quite a bargain IMHO... but CHECK.
-
Just FYI, I make that spec come out at £33,335 list price brand new...
-
It really is important to validate all the dealers claims and I'm sure you don't need anyone telling you this.
It does seem a lot of car for the money.
I've ordered my GTI in the same colour so I'm very biased
-
Thanks all.
From the advert, the ACTUAL optional extras I can see are -
Sat Nav
Rear Camera
Leather
Dyna Audio
Heated Seats
Is there anything else which is an EXTRA?
Sometimes, a lot of independent dealers like to list stuff which is standard, to inflate the actual car on the advert. I'm trying to distinguish from the advert what in fact is standard, versus what was optional.
Please let me know if I've missed anything.
-
Keyless too. Was keyless standard on the 14 plates. For me it's one of the best options but that's cos I'm a lazy bas****

LOL!! Thanks :-)
Keyless is now added to the 'actual' extras list. Glad it's on there, everyone seems to be very positive about that particular option.
-
It's got Park Assist too.
Looks like the previous owner, or the dealer has skimped on tyres tho'. Roadstones?

I agree. Not the best tyre so a bit frustrating, however, not a deal breaker.
I will thoroughly check all the specified extras / options etc. when i see the car up close.
Are the Santiago alloys problematic with the buckling, or is it a case of 'only negativity is posted on internet car forums'?
-
Keyless isn't standard on the three door cars anymore. It's not even an option.
It might be that the tyres were worn out and it's been part exchanged and the seller has put the budget ones on. It's something that is easily changed so don't let it put you off buying g the car if everything else checks out.
It might have dynamic chassis control too. You can find this out by pressing the drive select button. Top left of the gear lever. Go to individual and customise. If it's got it there will be an option to change the stiffness of the shocks. If it's there keep quiet as it's a £800 option so it won't help your negotiations.
Looks a great car though.
-
Lovely car that
I love the Santiagos, they look the business
-
Well specced car and it looks like it does have DCC ( Dynamic chassis control) .
Useful option with 19"s.
-
I think there have been a couple of internet users with buckling problems on the 19's, but I'd say it was far from common across the total number of people with them.
I wouldn't worry about it unless you can see a problem with this car right now.
The tyres are a bit weird though, at 14k miles its needed new boots all round? Most are seeing 35k+ from the factory bridgestones rears.... and about 14k on the fronts. These el cheapo tyres seem an odd customisation by the previous owner, there has to be a reason although quite what that might have been is anyone's guess. I doubt that you will find out.
-
I would check that they are genuine santiagos and not replicas, why else would you spec a car like that and put crappy tyres on, doesn't make sense to me.
-

I don't know if I'd mention Nav pro as that was a £1200 extra back then. It certainly looks as if it has it with the bigger screen.
It has got a decent spec. Heated seats come as standard on VW Leather.
I know its already been mentioned what the list price cost but you can buy that today brand new from a broker for £27,500. Possibly slightly less if you shop around.
Its £5,500 more than what you are paying but you might find buying via PCP works out less for a new car.
Going that route its roughly £375 a month over 48 months with a £1k deposit but remember you would have a final payment come the end of the term or trade it in or hand it back and walk away.
-
Keyless wasn't standard on 14 plate cars - at least it wasn't on my GTI.
Also, Roadstones aren't actually that bad. I had a set on the front of my old Astra VXR (All I could get after a blowout in Cyprus) and they did grip surprisingly well, although they are soft, so wore down quite quickly. It also might not have come on Bridgestones - remember it's on 19s which seemed to come with a greater variety of tyres than the Bridgestone/Continental choices of the 18s.
-
My 19s came with Pirelli P Zeros as standard and 40k Niles later they're not buckled at all. Although be prepared to cry when you have to change the front tyres, I've change mine three times in 40k.
-
3 fronts in 40k, thats 13.3333333k per set, not far off the 14k I'd expect from a GTD on 18 BS's.
Was that Pzero's each time? They are quite soft aren't they?
What about the rears? Swapped those yet?

Thank for all the information guys, really appreciated.
I spoke with a VW dealer this morning, and he has suggested (obviously!) that I buy a brand new car.
I plan on leasing the car for three years on a PCP scheme, with final balloon. The numbers look very close, as VW offer a higher contribution on the deposit and a lower APR on new cars. This really surprised me! Had no idea I was that close to a brand new car, am I missing something?
I plan on returning the car after 36 months anyway so my Total Cost of Ownership is lower than the overall total price.
Apparently, the new car will have as "standard" most of the items already present on this '14 plate car. Sat Nav, Heated Seats, Keyless etc, all come as standard on the newer GTD's. I did not know this - is it true? Excluding the leather, Santiago's, and rear camera (I think), everything else is equipped on a new order.
So now do I go for a brand new one, or stick with the 14 plate?
-
You would have to pay about £1200 to have Dynaudio and Nav Pro on a new car.
They are combined together and called the 'tech pack' but can be ordered separately.
-
The current PCP deals from VW on GTI and GTD are very competitive, presumably a result of 'the troubles'! So your dealer is right in that respect. VW's PCP deals available on used cars are nowhere near as attractive. Yes, all the things you mention are now standard (nav, heated seats etc) and you're also correct that the rear camera is still an option.

If you definitely don't want to have the option to keep the car then have you considered leasing through one of the large lease websites? Most lease deals seem to be for 2 rather than 3 years but there are some for 3. The annual cost will often be lower on a lease, although adding extras has a significant impact on the cost.

You have to factor in that after a year with the 14 plate car you will no longer have a warranty to cover you for any problems and will have to start paying for MOTs. Granted the car shouldn't need any work for an MOT but if there isn't much in it between brand new and 2 year old I know what I would do. Plus you can add any options that you prefer.

Sat Nav is standard but not the screen size that was in the 14 pate. That was 8" and the Nav Pro. The standard Sat Nav in the GTD is the 6.5"
Keyless isn't standard on 3 door any more. In fact you can't even spec it as an extra.
-
Leather is also an expensive option.
If I were you I would price up a brand new car through carwow.com with the options you would like on and see what comes back. If you do it tonight you will get responses tomorrow.
Once you know you will be able to compare the costs.
-
Thanks all.
The spec of the '14 car is what is drawing me. Goes without saying that a new car with all that spec is massively more expensive on a PCP. The rear camera, leather, big screen, all adds up.
With regards to warranty, will the grey 14 plate have a transferrable VW warranty? To my knowledge, only VW Supplied used cars come with the warranty. How does the Manufacturer Warranty work if the car has not been supplied from a VW dealer, yet remains in the warranty period?
-
The car comes with a vw warranty that lasts 3 years I believe.
It won't matter that you bought the car second hand, the warranty is with the car, not the owner.

It's 3 years? I thought it was 2. Given I thought it was 2 years warranty from birth, as the car is a June-2014 registration, I presumed I would only have the remaining 6 month VW warranty, taking me to June-2016. If, in fact, the warranty is 3 years, then I am covered until June 2017 - which is excellent. :-)
Devils Advocate question - how can I be certain VW will not have any issues, despite the fact that I did not buy it from them? I do not want to be met with resistance and they refuse to help if - IF - I need to call them (which I'm hoping I'll never have to...... Whaaaat? One can hope)!!
-
According to the brochure, you get 2 yrs unlimited mileage manufacturers warranty and 1 year 60,000 miles retailer warranty, whichever is soonest. Whatever that means.

The way I have always understood VW warranty is that you get the mandatory 2 years warranty VW and the 3rd year is from VW UK so it is 3 years in total. I was also under the impression that you can buy extra warranty from VW for another year but you need to get it before the end of the 3rd year.

This is an excellent point and needs a thorough investigation!! :nerd:
But in all seriousness, they should be made by Ronal if I'm not mistaken so it's definitely worth checking out.
It will be stamped on the inside of the wheel somewhere

Tweet @VWUKHelp they'll put your fears to bed.
It doesn't matter where the car came from (Unless its an import I believe) but you will have no problems at all. The car is covered for 3 years regardless of dealers / owners its had.

It means that if you buy from a UK dealer, you have the full 3 years. If you buy an import (Ireland/Malta/Cyprus spec ate common for UK import) the 2 year only warranty starts from when the car was registered/PDI'd?

Hi All - quick update: I bought the car!
Checked it out very thoroughly. Wheels are legit, and all the paper work was in order. Very pleased with it.
It drives superb. The Santiago alloys look very good. There is a slight kerbing on one of them and a minor scratch on the lower skirting; does any know any good mobile alloy wheel and dent repairers in London?
Must say, the car is impressive. The grey looks superb, real head tuner. The Tyre Pressures were low, but other than that, the car was in perfect order. Look out for lots more questions, as I'm sure I'll have many things to ask. Wading through the instruction manuals is not as fun as talking to fellow owners.
Thanks to everyone for all their valid contributions - very helpful.
-
Congratulations!
I think you did the right thing as it looked a really good car.
Did you get it any cheaper in the end and when will you be putting some decent rubber on them santiagos?
-
Thank you.
The boots are actually ok, seems futile to dish out before necessary. Once the tyres start to go, then for sure, I'll treat it to some new rubber.
I did it get it slightly cheaper, and got a good deal.

Hi AS, I am in the same boat as you. How much did you get the car for in the end please? as the original ad is no longer available and I have no idea of the value.
Thanks
