Title: Another dumb question...
Post by: bgbazz on 30 December 2015, 16:13
A search has turned up nothing, so my question is...

Is it possible, advisable and safe to fit a towbar to my Mk4 Estate 4Motion...I have a perfectly good trailer sitting in my garage and nothing to tow it with.

Just wondering because I have a local chap who makes and fits such things.

All advice welcome.

Thanks mate...my man builds and fits to EU specs, but my model isn't on his list....he said he could make one, but refused to put the EU compliance sticker on it. He's a stickler for the regs, so maybe I have to do a search on his behalf.

In the meantime....

Thanks for the links mate...the problem is not the build but the little yellow sticker...if it can't be verified it becomes a MOT fail.  Just for info, let me tell you this...my man designed and fitted a towbar on my Nissan Patrol...it had no sticker of compliance so it failed the next MOT.  I removed the swan neck and re submitted ...passed this time!

Driving in the mountains during the next winter I towed a Q7 and an ML320..STILL LINKED TOGETHER out of a snowdrift for about 5 kms, using the same towbar....it still passed the next MOT, after all that.(just because I removed the swan neck).

It all revolves around the little yellow sticker....put one on a POS, attached with superglue, it will pass....build the strongest version known to man....without the sticker, it will fail!  Young ladies who polish office chairs have much to answer for!!

As I said earlier..thanks for the links and info...after much research and phaffing about, I've decided to flog the trailer and learn to do without.

Silly question, could you not just buy a sticker and put it on yourself?

Yeah, I could probably do that, but the grief it would bring if/when I got caught, makes it a big risk and not one I want to take.
