Looking to swap my GTD for a GTi. (Long story - not dieselgate related!).
Loyalty £1,000 is only paid on cars delivered by 31st of March, so I am, at best, borderline. Anybody know what delivery times are, right now? Also, should I be expected to take the whole risk of that £1K, should the car, for no fault of mine, not turn up in time? Dealer is talking mid March, but then he wants the deal, doesn't he.
-
I was recently quoted car availability by March, for the new registration. Having said that, I have yet to meet a salesman who has much conviction though to be fair. Even when I mentioned recent "problems" for VW, one asked me what I was referring to!
You may find a few dealers who have pre ordered cars which may arrive earlier. I doubt you will be able to change the build spec though?
The current deals are due to expire on 30 Dec 15. As VW car sales looked much lower, something like -20% in recent SMMT data, I would expect the deals to be improved in 2016?
-
My dealer reckons 8 weeks delivery on the GTI.
I ordered mine last weekend for March delivery just in case of delays and obviously the factory will close over christmas ( I assume ).
-
Yeah I ordered on the 10th of December and have been quoted March delivery.
-
I would reckon if you order now and get the bonus included and the dealer / VW cannot deliver before due date its their problem not yours , you can always state its part of the deal .
Have you tried any other dealers / brokers ?
-
When I bought my GTI PP on launch in 2013 I got the dealer to guarantee my trade in price no matter what date the car was delivered which paid off as the estimate of 3 months ended up being over 6 months.
I am sure you could try this with your deal on buying a GTI even if the offer ends in march which maybe before delivery date. It's worth a try. If they want your money desperately enough they will do it.
-
I ordered my second GTI on 1 st dec
I was told march / april delivery
my dealer gave me a trade in price plus the £1000 , all put on the order form
I paid a refundable £ 500 deposit .
we both know where we stand they got the order I got my bonus
-
There seem to be quite a few of us going for second GTI's. What a boring bunch lol
-
at least we are changing colour
-
When I went in to order the GTI on the 5th of December and I was told there was no way it would be delivered by the end of March.
The salesman told me he still had a GTI on order from July that was due the last week in December so running at 5 months.
However he found one on the system with a provisional build date of beginning of February so we altered that to my spec.
I suppose it all depends what kind of allocation the dealer has.
You may find a few dealers who have pre ordered cars which may arrive earlier. I doubt you will be able to change the build spec though?
You can change the build spec right up until you have a confirmed build week. This is 4 weeks before the car gets built. After that you can't change anything.
-
I ordered a replacement beginning of december and I have a build date and am fully expecting to pick mine up 2nd march
-
Ordered mine last week for March. Another who's gone GTI again but got close to a Scirocco Black edition. Just a different colour but added PP to DCC and wanted Satnav. Not sure I'm bothered about a warm bum but hey why not. Haven't had a hamper off them like last night - miserable sods.
-
Apologies for abandoning this thread, but I decided that the pressure of making a decision on spec etc. to place an order for a car that couldn't be guaranteed for March 31st, all to save £1000, was not for me. Looking at other options atm. Current favourite is an S3 Sportback. Reckon it beats the R on spec and price, plus Audi finance works better, due to interest rates and future values.
Comments? 😳
Oops, sorry! Happy New Year to you all!
-
Depends what spec you are after.
As far as I know the S3 has leather and Nav but doesn't have following as standard which the R has
Folding mirrors, adaptive cruise control, auto lights, auto dimming rear mirror, auto rain sensor, privacy glass, adaptive Xenons, hill hold, parking system plus.
If you only want the Nav & leather then you are sorted but all those other wee extras soon add up.
If you really want the GTI, if you go into your local dealer they can find cars on the system that can be altered to your spec and delivered in time. Its only a fresh order that might struggle for a March delivery.
-
TBH I love Sepang Blue and Alcantara seats.
If you spec'ed up both cars to similar levels, with VW leather the price it is, there wouldn't be much between them. The TT I had for 4 years, without a rattle or a squeak, suggests to me that the Audi would be a much nicer place to be.

If you want leather on either car then there's not a lot between them at RRP, the R gets £2700ish worth of equipment that is optional on the Audi. Most could live without leather on the VW, but not much of the standard equipment on the Golf that would be essential on the Audi. The equipment levels on the Audi are shocking for a range topping car of its price. You get nice seats, a MFSW, non-adaptive Xenons and that's about it. The very open design of the front grille leaves the intercooler very exposed to stone damage and Audi hasn't acknowledged this design flaw or fixed it despite a fair few people falling victim to it on the forums.
If you're not interested in leather then that Audi will end up costing about £4.5k more than the VW, between the options, the £1000 loyalty payment (if you get the R in time) and the £1250 deposit contribution. It's a cert the S3 will be worth more than the R at trade-in, but likely to be worth £20k in p/x at 3 years old vs a realistic £17k for the R.
Are Audis screwed together any better than VWs? I seriously doubt that - many shared parts, same building techniques and factory tech (paint shops, welding etc) across the VAG European plants. Might get an Audi next time if VW residuals do take a hammering and don't recover from the emissions scandal that affects Audi engines as much as VWs (although the press have tarnished VW more than any other VAG marque), or just to feel like i'm in something different.
The reviewing press also unanimously decided that the R has sharper handling than the S3 and externally it looks better (the S3's seats look better though), but would you notice the handling differences if not flinging either car around the track? Between the 2 cars it's six and two threes IMO on ownership costs IF you don't want leather in the R.

I can't vouch for the Golf's build quality until mine arrives in March but I'm coming from a 2006 A3 S Line and my wife has a 2014 A3 S Line and the way they are put together is very impressive indeed.
Her car in particular appears to be bomb proof!
I find it a bit spartan inside but it has beautiful seats and the infotainment system is very well engineered.
Hers has the DSG box and it looks and feels incredibly robust.
I don't think you would be disappointed with either the R or the S3 but I think the S3 looks a bit meaner.
PS
Anyway who has come from an A3 to a Golf, I would love to hear your comments on the build quality of the Golf in comparison.

Part of the reason I am up for a change, 2 years into a 3 year PCP deal, is that I have failed to bond with my GTD and, frankly, still miss my old TT. The TT interior was really well designed and finished, and the whole car still felt brand new after 4 years.
It's not that my GTD is a bad car in any way. I admire the engineering and the cabin is comfortable enough. For me, what the car lacks is personallity. I also think the engine lacks a little bit of the spirit that previous VW performance diesels had. I think the 150PD engine, in the Mk iv I had, was more of a drivers' engine.
I'm hoping to find what I am missing, together with the practicallity I now require, in the S3.
and TBH I love Sepang Blue and Alcantara seats!

I know how you feel as I feel very similar myself. The GTI is a great all rounder but I never had the same kind of buzz from owning it as I did with my TT. In almost all ways it's a better car than my mk2 TT but the TT just felt more special. I would like to try something different and right now I can't get my mind off of the M235i. Just for pure voyerism this would probably be my perfect spec if I could afford it.. Feel free to shoot me down

The MQB platform's refinement has taken away a lot of the buzz - I suspect that a MK3 TT will also have lost that raw feeling that used to make my Scirocco 170TDI a far more exciting car to drive than the GTD, and the 150PD engine was brutal in it's delivery when the turbo kicked in. That's what you get for progress in refinement.
The GTD and GTI feel slower than they actually are, the excitement has been largely engineered out of them at normal law abiding speeds. The R just about has enough clout under hard acceleration for you to feel it beyond the refinement that the MQB platform affords.

You still get to see the TT though and the m235i looks great and if drives like the 135i you will enjoy it take 1for a test drive

Seriously tempted Barry so might try and get a test drive some point this year. Never driven a rear wheel drive car either so would be a new experience for me  :embarrassed:

We ordered the wife's R on Friday the 2nd October and it's due to be registered this Wednesday, the 6th. However, still waiting to hear from the lease company about paying our deposit so I would say the chance of getting it this week is slim. That makes it 14 weeks next Friday.
I suppose 14 weeks is fairly typical. I was told 12 ish but always thought that would be optimistic. Pretty bog standard car too - Lapiz blue 5 door with heated seats and mirror link.
-
Not sure if anyone will be interested but I ordered a GTI PP 5 door manual in Carbon Grey in October from Altricham VW in Manchester.
It was standard with just car net app added but will have all the latest 'free' upgrades ie winter pack and keyless.
I changed my spec shortly after but they couldn't cancel the original order.
Anyway, the dealer called to update me on my new order today and mentioned that the original car is due in tomorrow so if anyone fancies not having to wait 8 weeks for that particular spec of car, give Matt Walker a call.

Interesting. Care to let me know what sort of discount you had negotiated on that car before switching?
-
They matched exactly the drivethedeal price.

Thats strange because they can just alter the spec of the car or did you have a confirmed build date?
-
No I didn't have a confirmed build date but I was always after a March delivery so I think it suited the dealeship to just re-order the car and keep the original order as well.
As the dealer said, it's never a bad thing to have a carbon grey GTI in stock.
Whatever the reason, the car will be here soon.
-
They matched exactly the drivethedeal price.
cheers.
-
I ordered my GTI on the 13th of December and according to @VWUKHELP twitter account, the provisional build date for the car is week 6 (2nd week of Feb, and it could change either way apparently).
No update on the VW car build tracker yet. Is it just me, or does the build tracker look alot like the Dominos Pizza tracker!?
Recon I'm on for a March delivery?
-
They matched exactly the drivethedeal price.
cheers.
The cars arrived at vw Altrincham.
It looks superb!

Did you go down there just to have a look? Thinking of having that one instead?
I have made some enquiries and just waiting to hear back. Will be interests to hear how much the price has shot up now it's in stock.
-
No, not been down but Matt kindly sent me a short video just to tease me a bit more.
I can email it to you if you would like to see it
PM me your email if you are interested

The tracker will change 4 weeks before the build date to give a confirmed build date.
We are now on build week 1 so it doesn't look like your order has moved forward to week 5.
I'm in a similar boat. I was told the 1st week in February but it looks like the earliest I will be is build week 6
So when the tracker turns to build week confirmed you are probably looking anywhere between 6 - 8 from collecting it from the dealer.
I also found @vwukelp quite useful for information when I bought my GTD although initially they kept telling me to approach my dealer so I had to bend the truth a bit before they would give me some info

The order date for the GTI that I subsequently changed was 22 Oct and it only arrived today.
That's about 11 weeks but I presume the factory closes over xmas ( may be wrong ) so 9 weeks sounds about right.
I'm sure someone will correct me if that's complete garbage :embarrassed:
-
I must find out my build week. I ordered on the 9th of December...

Aha! Good job you lot said that as I would have thought I was being ignored otherwise. The system appears to send messages but they obviously don't go anywhere. Strangely though I can send pms to forum traders so perhaps the rules are different there!
-
OK, I gave in today, with the loyalty payment date being extended until end of May deliveries.
Ordered a 5 door GTi in Carbon Grey, with DSG, Carplay and rear side airbags. Not a huge discount, but I got the deal I wanted and the dealer will now be taking whatever depreciation hit the GTD suffers until the new car arrives.
Only downside is that it may be 12 weeks coming!
-
I ordered a Gti pp Carbon grey 5dr manual Mine has taken 10 weeks ordered end of October. Not sure if dsg is same lead time can't see why not
-
Yes, I think my sales guy was just being cautious. 10 weeks would be good!
-
ordered GTI DSG
1 st December , build week confirmed today 15 2 2016
hopefully delivered by mid march
-
Snap I ordered on the 10th of December and I now have a build week of the 15th Feb...
-
X2 ordered on the 13th December. Confirmed build week commencing 15/02/16. Hopefully it'll arrive early March, but probably more likely to be mid march (possible delivery 4 weeks after build from what I hear)
-
Mine was built last Tuesday (12th) and has now made its way to Emden where it is waiting for a boat. So there is a chance that it will make it to the dealer within the 4 week period.
-
After much heart searching and checking out pictures from the web, I rang the dealer today to change my colour from Carbon Grey to Tungsten Silver! Decided I needed a change from Black, or nearly Black and thought Tungsten would also be a little different to the norm.
Dealer told me the tracker was showing an unconfirmed week 12 build, so mid April pickup?
-
Ordered mine the 12th December and have a build week 8/2/2015
-
typical VW
had an e mail yesterday saying my GTI will be built week commencing 15 /2 .16
according to my tracker number my GTI will be built week commencing 8 /2 /16
think I will just wait till the dealer says come and collect your car

-
Mine was the same. The online tracker said week commencing 04/01/16, but the text and email said week commencing 11/01/16 and it was actually built at the beginning of week commencing 11/01/16. But don't know if that means yours will be the same (the later date).
-
Mines the same the email say the 15th tracker says the 8th
Quality software engineers at VW!
-
It will be the earlier date. For the most up to date info tweet @vwukhelp and they will let you know whats going on.

Mine was the same as above, tracker told me 01 February.
Yet when I logged in to VW it was saying 08 February.
I emailed @vwukhelp as they have been great in the past. They came back saying it was a confirmed build week of week 6 (w/c) 01 February.
I thought nothing more of it until I was on the week numbers http://www.epochconverter.com/date-and-time/weeknumbers-by-year.php where it says week 6 is (w/c) 08 February.
So I went back to @vwukhelp asking for a bit of clarification. "Apparently VW sometimes go with different week numbers"
You couldn't make it up. No wonder they are in such a state
