Title: Mk2 golf GTI 2l bottom end conversation
Post by: Kieranlaad1996 on 17 December 2015, 15:02
Hey guys just sign up but been roaming around for years as a guest yes I know a wee bit sneaky lol.

Anyway let get to it I want to do the 2l bottom end conversation on my mk2 golf 8v GTI

What I would like to know is what's involved I know quite a bit but I take it you use the original gearbox on the mk2 and of course the head as well lol but it's it an easy swap ect?

Another thing I'd like to know is will a mk3 golf Kent cam fit in my mk2 golf head?

Any help would be awesome guys looking at getting the parts before chirstmas hopefully and have it done asap :-)

Thanks in advance

Kieran

Easy job mate, loads of info on the web, just have a search on Google. eg: http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?248292-Mk2-Golf-2-0-8v-Conversion

You use everything already fitted to your engine pretty much, just might have to change/adapt the distributor depending on which 2litre bottom end you use.

Mk3 8v cam will be fine in mk2 head.

I'm using my gear box on the mk2 already so do I use the fly wheel off the mk2 or use the mk3 one?

And how do you modify the dizzy? Can't find anything on Google about the dizzy unless I'm tpying in the wrong thing

use the mk2 flywheel as it is lighter and give you a better throttle response  with the dizzy you will need to swap the bottom gear of the agg one and fit it to the original dizzy. you will also need a dizzy spacer ring. also you need to use agg head gasket and timing belt/covers. that's about it really.

Thanks mate that's a big help take it you just use the mk2 golf head bolts? And can I make the spacer ring or do I need to buy one? And is it the same toque setting for the head bolts? Thanks in advance

yeah same head bolts and torque setting. I would just buy the spacer ring as they need to be very accurately made. I would also advise before fitting engine take the sump off and give it a good clean out along with the oil pick-up pipe/gauze.

if you go on google and type in "mk2 golf distributor spacer" then click on images and you will see it at top of page. there are about £20 but you could just buy a new dizzy for about £50. less hassle and you have a brand new part. if you choose to buy new then it needs to be a 2E dizzy and not an AGG dizzy as the agg spark set-up is not compatible with the mk2 golfs engine management.

nice one. it will save the messing around with the old one. its good to have a brand new hall sensor to as they don't give much warning when they fail.

I'm going against the grain here, but what's the point of a 2l bottom end conversion?

Right now, your car is between 23 and 35 years old. It's probably not as sprightly as it used to be, for sure.

Changing the bottom end is a lot of hassle for what it really needs, which is something along the lines of having the engine bored and rebuilt. The injectors are probably screwed as well, and they need replacing (they actually have a shelf life).

Working on its real problems will gain you much more in performance than messing around with the bottom end, which merely increases torque. Torque is useful for my pickup truck, and even more useful for when I'm pulling an excavator.

Your Golf however weighs about a ton and does not pull an excavator. So bhp is more important than lbs torque.

i would say that replacing a worn out 1.8 with a decent low mileage 2 litre would be cheaper and much less hassle. so I am going with the grain on this one. also as strange as it may be lots of people find the 2 litre to be better on fuel (me included). ultrasonic cleaning would sort the injectors if they even need it.

I agree, I done the 2l conversion over a year ago and it was a nice upgrade, the extra torque gives a good pull from low revs
