Title: I'm looking to buy a GTI this weekend! Help :)
Post by: dewey1970 on 11 December 2015, 09:09
Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to buy a MK6 GTI this weekend.  I was looking at buying a 330D BMW Touring. But with all the revelations about Diesels, and how poisonous they are, and being a daddy with an 8 year old, I can't knowingly go out and buy one. So I looked at other options and the GTI is such a great all rounder.

I used to own a MK5 GTI 5 years ago. It did 27 mpg, so I had to get rid of it as I do 16k miles PA. Members of the forum have told me the newer engine in the MK6 is more fuel efficient and I can expect @34mpg. Which would be awesome.

Got my eye on a few on autotrader and will likely have to get a train this weekend with the family and drive it back to East Riding of Yorkshire. Can't wait!

My budget is @11k. I'm looking at >70k, leather, DSG, heated seats and any extras such as DynAudio are nice to haves.

The one I really like has 4 owners and its done 60k. Number of owners seem high but the car looks very tidy. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201511148707694?engine-size-cars=2l_to_2-5l&maximum-mileage=up_to_80000_miles&fuel-type=petrol&sort=datedesc&model=golf&onesearchad=used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew&postcode=hu165ua&quantity-of-doors=5&make=volkswagen&keywords=leather%20seats&page=1&price-to=12000&transmission=automatic&search-target=usedcars&maximum-age=up_to_6_years_old&aggregatedTrim=GTI&price-from=8000&radius=1500&logcode=p

Though I also like this one..

What do you think of the cars?

Anything I should be looking out for?

Thanks in advance :)

Also is the Sat Nav worth having in the GTi. I already have a Garmin which is excellent, would it be as good and is it touch screen?

i bought mine around a month ago...the gti does really put a smile on your face...especially when you hear that dsg fart...look out for the timing chain tensioner...find out if the owners have had it replaced..as this is a common fault in the 00-10 model...you can tell if its on its way out by starting the car...you will hear a sort of grinding noise..theres a thread on here about the issue..and also a video of the noise..

About the mpg...35 mpg is probably achievable if you drive very sinsibly...which at times is hard haha..

to be honest i hardly use my satnav...i prefer using google maps..ive used it maybe once or twice and it is good

Seriously?

Yes, its true. That and the fact no-one knows what impact these revelations will have on the residuals of diesel cars.

Thanks, what MPG are you getting?

Also, what do you guys think of the cars on autotrader I posted? Fair price/good spec?

I get around 17mpg around London but mainly short trips. On a motorway journey I can get up to 41mpg with some spirited driving too haha

On the grey one you posted the drivers seat leather looks a bit worn - just check that out as maybe the leather just needs a good clean

Choose a car based on condition rather than spec. The dynaudio is very nice but lots of us don't have it and are happy with the normal speakers

Maybe try look at dealers just so you have piece of mind with the warranty

So I'm now the proud owner of a vgc Silver 2009 DSG GTI.

Drove it back from Surrey last night to the East Riding. A good 240 miles and I love it.

I was impressed with how it rides, it feels very expensively damped and planted on the road. Doesn't tramline at all. I was going at a sensible speed and it avg 37mpg - very impressed.

Having come from a Lexus RX400h, I was surprised how well screwed together the Golf feels. Much better than I had anticipated, Not one squeak. Quiet in the cabin, except for the road noise on certain sections of the motorway - but not that bad.

Steering feels nicely weighted and assured. DSG didn't miss a beat. Everything works.

I got it for a good price considering its recently been serviced and has only done 59k miles. Previous owners bought a new M135i.

Pretty bog standard, DSG, heated leather, Parott hands-free (haven't worked it out yet).

Is it possible to connect my iphone 6s to car, it has an iphone 4 charger built in.

How do I get the iphone to play through the radio? I tried plugging it into the aux socket via a lead but no sound came out.

I average around 25 in town (London) and upto 40 on motorway. Pretty decent considering the performance.

Technically your iPhone should play through the aux socket (have you pressed aux button on radio?!)

Alternatively is your car fitted with MDI module? I think it's only compatible of you have rcd 310/510 or rns 510. You can use an MDI cable

Hi my car is fitted wit the MDI module - I have x2 cables, 1 for iphone 4, another with a usb cable.

If I attached an apple lightning lead into the MDi usb cable - would the car be able to access/play my iphone 6 spotify tunes?

No I dont think it works like this, I seem to remember trying it myself when I picked up my GTi. All you need though is your VW MDI iPhone 4 cable and a lightning adaptor -

http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter (http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter)

This is how I use my Iphone 6 in the car. Don't buy it from Apple though (the link is just an example), get yourself on Ebay, they are much cheaper.

Thanks Norvwich - much appreciated :)

Ended up ordering an apple adaptor, every cheaper amazon one seemed to have people complaining about compatibility issues. Arrives tomorrow :)

Will functionality will this allow? I use spotify.

Hi , Regarding the MDI comparability with the newer iPhones I had the same issue on our 2010 GTi even when using a genuine VW lightning connector as the software version of the actual MDI device in the console was too old - I could charge but not play music , I managed to swap to a 2012 year one and it worked great - I think there is a way to update the MDI unit software via USB but I, m not sure how to do it , best of luck , hope this helps , cheers 😁

That should do the trick. I never got around to do it so let us know how you get on! And also with the Amazon Lightning adapter! If it works well I might do the update too.

I'll post tomorrow, though be warned, it looks dirty! Horrible weather, my cats have taken a liking to the bonnet and tree foilage do not a shiny Golf make.

Congratulations on the purchase, patiently waiting for some pics
