2 part question
Any idea on VW releasing a cabriolet for the current Golf? Im more keen on the GTI/R spec models if they are. I know they have a history of skipping the cabriolet every other generation and theres been no talk of one lately. Also with the whole emissions thing would it be even less likely? :huh:
That said Im tempted by the Mk6 R - prices seem to be dropping and should be q competitive come summer 2k16. At around 21k you can pick up something q nice. Despite being based on the older mk6 I think this is negated by the fact that Golfs tend to age q well stylistically. The R Cabrio is actually roughly the same price now as a similarly mileaged Mercedes Benz A250 which is on my shortlist. Your thoughts on them both?...

Terrible car IMO. A totally compromised car and never looks right. I fail to see the point of a performance version of a hatch with the roof chopped off.
Strictly for hair dressers imo, and it may as well be the 1.4tsi then.

The initial pricing of £38k seems absolutely bonkers in retrospect though it was chopped down to £34k soon after. Just tempting how that car with 20k miles is now around the 20 mark. Do you think it will drop further or sit at 19/20k where it is now.
I do agree that majority buyers of Golf cabrios go for the smaller engines which is why im unsure whether they will do a Mk7 GTI/R Cabrio

If you're after a cabrio, I'd go for something that was designed as such.
You could have a very nice Honda S2000 for much less than £20K - a wonderful car, proper handling... designed as a cabrio... but only 2 seats.
Or for not much more you could pick up, Jag XKR (probably a 4.2 but that's still 420hp)... it has 4 seats, not sure you'd want to use the rear ones though :smiley:
£20K for a Golf ragtop, even a GTI or and R, makes little sense if you look around at what you can have for that sort of money... wouldn't be for me... I see their demographic as more Salon owner or Builder's wife
I can't imagine you'd be insisting on 4 seats in a cabrio... nobody will want to sit in the back with the roof down

Had 3 MG and none were very fast but they did not have to be, in fact cruising around in them or shuttling down some lanes to a country pub was the main appeal and so for me there is very little point in paying all them ££ for a car that may have the R or GTI badge but will not really give you the experience of the original design and if buying a convertible to have the hood down then you would not really want it to! As at high speeds its not really fun but a battering!
Standard Golf Convertible would be just as good and there are other models that do it much better to and if not restricted to needing 4 seats then Mazda and Honda do lovely 2 Seaters and given how they drive you get a really feeling of performance as push through some lanes and that's more what a convertible is about, experience and not performance.

Never been a fan of a hatchback in convertible form. Same with saloons.
Convertibles should be a coupe or designed to be a drop top from the start
