Title: Light at the rear of the interior door handle. Passenger side broken?
Post by: Watts on 15 November 2015, 15:18
Hi all, just a query - I only noticed the other night on the way home that there was a light on the door handle illuminating the door trim. Then I noticed there wasn't one on the passenger side. I'm assuming there should be one but before I do anything about it can someone confirm either way please?

Should it be the case that it needs an led replacing, cheap and easy or a dealer visit? I'd rather do it myself if easy than waste time at the dealers, assuming it would be warranty work.

Cheers!

Yes, on either front door handle there's an LED

Excellent, thanks. Now all I need to do is decide to do it myself or get the dealer to do it.

Must say though that interior lighting doesn't seem to be modern VW's strong point. Already replaced a blown bulb and now this! It was 10 years before any bulb went on my Audi. If the GTI wasn't such a great car to drive I'd consider being miffed

While it's still under warranty let someone else get their hands dirty and have a free coffee to boot.

Oh dear, possibly too late for that. Mr Khakhanded has already been at it. Got the door handle cover off okay apart from a small piece of plastic at the top inside the handle that snapped. Can't see the point of it as the handle went back on good and tight. But I also tried to force the led holder out and snapped that in half

Once I'd had a good look it was clear that the whole door card needs to come off as the led is hard wired and the cables disappear inside the door. Not averse to sorting it myself just concerned at all the broken parts I may end up with!

I'd still book it in then just deny all knowledge if they mention the broken bits.
"Well I'd not noticed it up until recently when a front seat passenger mentioned it not working, I do generally concentrate where I'm going when I'm driving in the dark rather than staring at the interior lighting I'll have you know; surely you lot should have noticed it at PDI?" in a huffy posh voice.

I'll have to give it some thought. Can't say I'm overly bothered. Plus I can't keep a straight face when blatantly lying!

No, I know where you're coming from but it will bother you in the end and you'll just have to put on your angry/disappointed/sad puppy dog eyes face and march/creep nervously into the dealership...
