Title: Alloy damage
Post by: mullermn on 09 November 2015, 12:12
Thanks to a kerb buried in leaves and bad judgement on my part I scratched one of my alloys this weekend  (https://photos-5.dropbox.com/t/2/AABP_aj002DxCkBpanc-yYi26CHTbD_fFwhAQsrdyG7JHQ/12/88520785/jpeg/32x32/3/1447088400/0/2/IMG_3185.JPG/EO2X70QYuugBIAcoBw/MELpzKJ3dceY-o2K-EgbPqp8gkesAVsqBWIAu0yahf4?size_mode=2&size=2048x1536)

Can anyone tell me what type of repair this would need and how much I should expect to pay, please?

Is there any harm in not getting it fixed straight away? I wasn't sure if the damage might make it more prone to any kind of corrosion.

Thanks for any help, guys.

Agreed. Barely noticeable.

Had my GTI only a couple of weeks and managed to catch my rear drivers alloy in a notorious car park. To say I was "annoyed" would be putting it quite mildly.

I have a quote from Lepsons to refurbish, though I'm worried the damage is quite deep. Any experiences on this?

Happened to me with my MK 6. Also quite deep. Good diamond cut repair and not too expensive. There is a limit to the number of repairs on a wheel as some material is removed each time. See the thread: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=274931.0

Not once it's covered in cr@p - those alloys are approaching mine for the amount of muck on 'em

^ that is true. Also the lacquer will wash off after a couple of car washes as it doesn't stick well to bare metal. From factory the spokes are diamond cut, then are painted in chrome silver prior to being lacquered for a better bond of the coat to the alloy surface.

I'd leave it. Just blob some wax on it to stop corrosion every other week or so. You could spend £100 on a refurb plus the hassle of logistics only for the same thing to happen again at any time.

If the damage was more than that, I'd fix it, but it's not a show car, it's a car that gets used to do the job it was intended for. You have to ask yourself, if you were buying it as a used car with that minor scuff on it, would it put you off? Would you get it repaired then? Probably not. You are annoyed with yourself now and want it perfect again, but give it a couple of weeks and you'll not be as bothered.

I haven't damaged an alloy but some w/n£e? Reversed into my car damaging the bumper. It happened about a month ago and it still bothers me now. It's booked in to get repaired at the end of the month and the repair bill is coming out of my pocket. I know who did it but at the time he drove off. The power of Facebook found him and when I met up he had the nuts to turn around and say I did the damage. I've let the rozzers know but I don't expect anything done. My point being if you damage or someone damages your motor and it's cost £20000 plus you want it putting right or is that just me

It only took 1500 miles until i've scuffed the front offside alloy

I'd taken up the 'Car Care Alloy Wheel Insurance' when i bought the car as i thought it good value (max 10 repairs over 3 years for £250)

The repair was completed last week by Flying Colours / Wheel Wizard at my home and the result is almost impossible to spot.

I'm aware there's a possibility that the lacquer might discolour over time but for now, my new car still looks new.
