Hi,
I have just noticed something thats got me thinking what the hell is going on. My mate just got a new car, an L plate 8 valve gti. I took it for a test drive the otherday and noticed that at 80 his car revs at about 3500 rpm. I have a P plate 8 valve Colour concept gti and that revs at 4000 rpm at 80 and at 2000rpm at 40.
What does your car rev at cus I don't know whose car is right.
Thanks
-
Reckon mine is about 3500 at 80 but I'll try and remember to check on the way home tonight!!
(97 P CC btw)
-
revs under load are directly related to gearing.. right?
like you said for your car 2000rpm = 40, therefore 4000rpm = 80.. double revs = double speed ih the same gear.
so you have to test both cars in the same gear at the same revs.
i could say mine does 60mph at 7000 revs.... but thats just about to hit the redline in second..
if there is still a different i guess maybe one box is different either by model year or been replaced with a different one?
-
OK. I double checked today. My car is deffo revving at 4000rpm at 80 in 5th gear compaired to now 2 confirmations of 80 at 3500rpm in 5th.
What could be causing this? The engine is standard and I have not remapped the ECU myself. Anyone have any ideas? Could a different gear box or changes to it explain it as 500 rpm difference is quite big.
Thanks

as i understand things you need get readings of speeds at a particular RPM. not the other way around.
so get say...
2000 RPM in 1st =
2000 RPM in 2nd =
2000 RPM in 3rd =
2000 RPM in 4th =
2000 RPM in 5th =
through these differences you'll be able to see whats up with the gearing.
if there is a difference (i'm sceptical) the only reason would be a different gear box

What he said.... Mine is doing 70 at 3000rpm. Couldnt get to 80 cos it's a mk3 slug
-
ok i know my car's a valver.. so totally diff gearing..plus it rev's up to 7000.. but still i got these figures out of mine earlier which follow a nice set patten
2000 RPM in 2nd = 20 ish
2000 RPM in 3rd =  30 ish
2000 RPM in 4th =  40 ish
2000 RPM in 5th = 45 ish
-
I'm gonna have to check this out tonight on the way back from work and see what figures I get
-
Ok we have the following speeds in my car
2000 RPM in 1st = 10
2000 RPM in 2nd = 15
2000 RPM in 3rd = 25
2000 RPM in 4th = 33
2000 RPM in 5th = 40
-
the spedo could be out but not by 5mph consistantly so really im no help
anyway what am i doing in a mk3 section
bye
-
^ if you're talking about diff between mine and his.. then its expected as mine is a valver and his ain't
i'd be interested to see figures from a MK2 1.8T conversion since they use the MK3 gear box.
-
I'm gonna get my mate to check his speeds at 2K and see the difference if any. This things confusing me. I've taken the car to 130mph and thats max speed and nearly redlining as it should be so why does it rev 500rpm more than others at lower speeds.
-
Whats the redline on an 8v? on a valver its something like 7200 RPM.
because the gearing is exponential you can work out your top speed from lower revs for the same gear.
for example, using my figures..
2000 RPM in 5th = 45 ish
therefore..
4000 RPM in 5th = 90 ish
6000 RPM in 5th = 135 ish (i think its more like 130.. )
mine flat out has been in between 135 and 140 on the clock.. with more "rev's" left..
i just realised something else...
do you or your mate have different wheels? they'll mess up the speedo readout if wrong..
-
I think the redline on an 8 valve is 6200rpm or something around there. Its been a while since I took the car to 130 but I remember it was near the redline (6K ) and I must have been doing about 130 - 135.
My mate has got 17" wheels on his car which could explain a difference in speed and revs as i've got the standard 15's
-
Dunno if the wheels should make that much difference if there are low profile tyres on the 17s? I can understand the size of the wheel making a difference to the speedo reading, that's obvious - but when you put bigger wheels on you generally put smaller profile tyres so the outside diameter of the tyre will be about the same. I can understand a small difference, but not 15-20 mph?!
What do you guys think - am I currrazy or do you think it's right?
-
yeah you're right... thats what i meant.. maybe one car has wrong wheels/tyres
-
They are low profile 17's so I would have thought that they would not make much of a difference. Bazzer you said that your mk3 revs at 3500rpm at 80 as well. Have you got the standard 15's still on the car?
-
Yep, dunno what profile the tyres are though and it's chucking down outsite so I'm not checking atm!! Perhaps after breakfast I'll go check. I thought they were 205 50 15s but I can't remember......
-
Yep, 205 50 15. And the tyres are all new so the circumference is 'book'. Obviously when the tyres are worn a bit, it'll make a difference
-
My mate checked his out and got the following
2000 RPM in 1st = 12
2000 RPM in 2nd = 20
2000 RPM in 3rd = 30
2000 RPM in 4th = 40
2000 RPM in 5th = 48
compaired to my figures below
2000 RPM in 1st = 10
2000 RPM in 2nd = 15
2000 RPM in 3rd = 25
2000 RPM in 4th = 33
2000 RPM in 5th = 40
Theres a big difference there. I don't know whats going on. I'm thinking that a previous owner adjusted the gear ratios. Any other ideas?
-
sure your mate hasn't got a valver? those figures are spookily like mine..
outside that.. he could have a diff box _or_ vw could have changed them between years.
-
Whoa there people... THink I've just looked at mine doing a proper 80, and it's more like 4k on the ol' rev-o-meter.....
WTF was I thinking?! I think it was cos I was guessing it was gonna be about that, based on my 70mph antics..... These mk3s sure are NOT built for speed!!!!
HTH...
-
Aha! Now were getting somewhere. Maybe the Colour Concepts are mapped differently or the later model GTI's are to get more torque out of them. I thought there were no differences engine wise between the CC' s and the normail 8v gti's.
-
I don't think there are any differences tbh mate, but I'll go along with it and start to be eliteist so I can turn my nose up at a 16v!!! LMAO!!
-
Yeah I like that. There a bit special! CC's rule
-
The average revs on my 8 Valver are 6,000
Seriously though , I can't be sure sure as I'm running 18s (215/35 zr18) so the speedo is a couple of mph out :undecided:
-
Yeah I like that. There a bit special! CC's rule
Any pics of yours then?
-
I'm working on them at the moment and should have them up in a couple of days.
-
Right, I also drive a 96N Colour Concept so today on the motorway I made a point of noting my revs at 80 MPH.
I was sitting between 3000-3500, mainly about 3400, defo under the 3500 mark! Does that throw a spanner into things or sound about right??????
-
Your joking! Right thats it, i've had enough. I got a new job where I won't be commuting 500 miles a week so my car is back to being a social car. I'm gonna chalk this up to some previous owner screwing with the gear ratio. Thanks for you help everyone. I can finally stop driving my car at 70 a put my foot down. Who cares about mpg's!!!
-
I noticed this had a recon box and fitted it a couple of months ago and @ 4000 rpm in 5th i am @ 80 my car maxes out at about 120 rpm just shy of the red
Mk3 Gti 8v AGG
Just wish i had checked before i removed the old box lol

Jesus wept I think i'm on sodding CRACK guys  Defo, 100% positive this time, 80mph is 3500prm. I am the worlds best numpty. Well second best (where's that mk2 Escort in my rear view :lipsrsealed: )
