Hi all,
Watching the news and vw are now saying there may be a co2 scandal too. And petrol models could be affected. Does anyone have any idea on whether the mk7 will be affected by this? As I understand it the mk7 Gtd was not effected by the diesel scandal due to being an eu6 engine?
Furthermore, what can be done if the car is affected? I'm guessing if the car actually emits more co2 than claimed then the road tax goes up? Not that this causes major issues but I'd feel a bit hard done by that due to cheating I now pay more than I first thought I was signing up for.

Described in the BBC news item as affecting certain car types with "smaller engines", mainly diesels but could include petrol engined cars too, and could affect VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat brands.
So, whether or not the mk7 GTI could be affected depends on whether or not 2 litres is considered to be a smaller engine. I'd expect smaller engines to be less than 2 litres though.

You won't pay any excess road tax.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over all of this Charlie. The whole thing is a bit of a storm in a teacup in my opinion.Especially with a MK7 GTI.

Pretty much impossible to fake CO2 output - CO2 and H2O are what you get when you burn fossil fuels in air, there's nowhere to hide the CO2 being produced nor prevent the car from emitting any while the car is running, if the car is combusting fuel it is also emitting CO2. Unless they passed the exhaust gases through a CO2 scrubber on their way out to absorb it - not something you could feasibly do outside a lab and very hard to hide in the presence of an official independent observer.
NOx is a byproduct of the combustion process and its formation depends greatly on temperature and pressure. You can force a diesel engine to produce less NOx by lowering the combustion temperature, but you increase soot evolution and make the car less efficient. Higher soot evolution (and increased pressure on the DPF to remove it through combustion) and higher CO2 output per mile/km at the expense of lower NOx is not something VW would want the car to be doing all the time when they're trying to maximise mpg, so you can see why the temptation was there to make the car temporarily run that way, but not all the time. Petrol engines run at much lower temps and considerably lower pressures than diesels, those conditions don't produce meaningful amounts of NOx, so it's not really a petrol problem.
The only CO2 scandal would be the use of stop-start in the EU testing cycle to reduce official CO2 output and lower mpg. For 24% of the current 11 minute EU test cycle, the car is at a standstill and if stop-start is fitted, that is 24% of the test cycle with no fuel use and therefore no emissions of CO2. All the car manufacturers are at it, but they're playing by the rules put in place. Upshot of this is that everyone got cheaper tax discs, downside is that some customers expectations of mpg were well away from reality.
It is the primary reason that with the introduction of stop-start, published mpg values went up around 20%, but real life mpg for the general public didn't really change.

This report says that VW came across irregularities when testing - it's as if they're suggesting that they don't/didn't know what was going on or had no control over it - I don't think we know the full extent of the scam yet either with VW or industry wide.
Initially I thought it was only 1.2 and 1.6 diesel engines that were affected and a SEAT dealer who is a personal friend assured me that there was no concerns with my Leon FR - 3 weeks later and 3 weeks after selling it I got a letter from SEAT who were "now in a position to inform me that my car was affected".
I saw a breaking report on Sky news last night at midnight saying that Porsche were about to announce that some of their cars were also affected - didn't catch much TV/news today and don't know where this went.
I think this is going to run for a while yet - i just hope that it ends before it hits the Mk7 Golf.

Having just sold my R (new car pick up day Saturday woo woo!) I can confirm that the VW scandal has affected prices. That, along with the flood of R's over the last month, meant it was not worth anywhere near what I had originally predicted (and by that I mean CAP value, looking at similar cars on sale etc etc). So thanks VW!
Granted, it will blow over and second hand prices will rise again IMO, but currently I have first hand experience of the scandal affecting part ex prices. Tarred with the same brush I'm afraid.

Mark, you can't leave us hanging like this  - what you getting pal??? Is it part of the big cat family by any chance?

Ha ha! Nope! I've gone for a Cayman S  Second hand one as I can't afford a new one, I'm a poor accountant after all! But its a cracking car and I can't wait to get behind the wheel - although its p!ssing it down today so I may regret the decision to go from AWD to RWD
-
I suppose it might effect the prices, if I was buying a VW of any type (oil burner, petrol, hell even electric) I'd be trying it on for a lower price. Might not wash with a VW dealer for a new one, but I bet you anyone buying your Mk7 today (dealer or private) would be giving you a kicking over this and low balling it.

Even better imo. Is it the new shape? The Cayman is a lovely car. Make sure to post plenty of pics and loads of feedback. Congratulations pal, absolutely brilliant. Very jealous!!

I've noticed the drop in prices of R's, just browsing Autotrader over the last few weeks. There seems to be quite a lot about, albeit fairly boggo spec ones - makes it tempting to try and pick up a used one for circa £25k.

My local dealership has 4-5 Brand new R's sitting on the forecourt which is very unusual. Now is the time when you can probably pick up s pretty good deal on one

Yeah, that's what I though, just a better drive than the F-Type. Yup, its 14 plate so new shape  pick up Sat so I'll get some pics up if the weather is ok! Cheers mate! Just got to try and not wrap it round a tree now while I get used to having a RWD car
I reckon the dealer will put mine on the forecourt for £29K - which is a steal for a 13 month old R, so a great time to pick one up if you're a buyer. There's loads on Autotrader as well. Thanks VW

Look forward to the pics! I absolutely love the look of the 981 Cayman

A brand new R DSG 5 Door from orangewheels is £29K, for a 13month old one I wouldn't want to be spending over £26K, although I see you have Nappa leather and Pro SATNAV so maybe not far off. With those extras new price is £33K

With what options though? It's the options that are the killer! Shocking how prices have fallen.

Yea, just noticed your options which puts the price well up.. £33K new price

They're the killer. Still, if you wanted a vanilla R and could get one for £26k then happy days! I paid more than that for my mk 7 GTI

26,876.00 on DtD today... 3-door manual of course...

It's all very well looking at broker prices, they're fine if you only have a low value part ex or no part ex.
If you have something of significant value to chop in then you need to a) actually get a sale and b) look after your capital and possibly c) sort your existing car finance out into the bargain.
This all affects the deal you're getting so you might find the actual cost to change might not be that different than just going to a decent dealer and getting a good part ex price versus a slightly less discounted new car.
Joe Public aren't that clued up on brokers, and I'm forever telling workmates that "no, there's not a catch and they're not all dodgy" so.
I've recently been getting them coming up to me saying "I've just had a letter from VW saying my car is affected, do you think I'll get compensation?"
My reply "I doubt it and if it's not under warranty then what are you worrying about?"
I think the latest (very annoying) Tesco TV advert kind of sums up your average thick as sh!t retail customer/consumer quite well.
Anyway, on to more interesting things: Congrats Matchboy! That sounds like a nice bit of kit you've just bought. Don't forget to post up some photos.
I can understand where you're coming from with the low prices for VW's right now - the trade are very cagey around VW's due to the general public uncertainty and scaremongering going on.
I reckon the emissions thing will hit VW so hard that the next R will have no visible tailpipes instead of four!!! :lipsrsealed:

Thanks! I will do! Yep, there was literally no room to haggle - and I have made a LOT of phone calls - prices have been severely affected. But of course, that only applies if you're looking to sell! And good for buyers!

You will always get a kicking p/xing a car so young, VW scandal or not. trading in a car at less than 18 months old, there's just not enough headspace between nearly new sticker price and new sticker price to give you a good price and retain a decent margin.
Example. New R is £32k RRP, someone savvy might get it for £28500. 6 months old it might be up for £30k, dealer willing to accept £29k for a sale. To make their customary 15% (20% if they're being greedy), they'll be offering you about £25k. That's at a VW dealership where a VW will attract top money, At a Porsche garage you won't get top whack for a VW.
Didn't fancy a punt selling it privately for somewhere between p/x and retail used price? What did you get for it in the end and how old was it (should have read the whole thread before jumping in - you've had it 13 months? Seems no more than 9 months ago you were talking about getting it).

I could have sold it privately, but to be honest I couldn't be bothered with the hassle, I find private sales of cars that have a lower value nice and easy, whereby a higher value car is just hassle as if people are spending that kind of money they'd prefer to buy from a dealer for reassurance - unless they're getting a great deal, which, if I'd put it on privately and based on other cars on autotrader, they wouldn't.
It's actually around 15 months ago I was talking about getting it - how time flies eh! I know I haven't had the R that long, however including the GTI, I've now been in a mk 7 for 34K miles - which if you do average yearly mileage equates to 3 years - so time for a change. This is no disrespect to the R in any way, its the best car I've ever owned by a country mile!
