Title: Engine bay questions (with pic)
Post by: SunnyGTI on 01 November 2015, 21:59
Got a coolant leak...looks like it is coming from the rad so getting VW to look at it this week. Fortunately under warranty still so hope they can do it for free...

But whilst looking under the bonnet noticed a few things to check with you guys

I have put a red and blue dot on the parts.

Red dot- what is this bit? It has a sticker with the date of January 2015 on it...

Blue dot - is it meant to have a hole/slot cut out?

Thanks!

Hey,

Red dot is the timing chain cover as I understand it. Does it say anything else on the sticker apart from that date?

Blue dot. Yeah that cut out is on my standard air intake too:

If you can check the service history of the car you may find that some work or check has been carried out on the timing chain or tensioner. If it was bought from a VW main dealer and serviced by them any dealer can check the service record for you over the phone if you giver them the reg number. Could just be the last time it was serviced?

VW now have a tool they can use to check the amount of 'slack' in the valve drive chain.

Yeah as above ^^^^

Red sticker is the timing cover, with it having a sticker on it, it will mean that some work has been done on it. Ring VW and check if was them.

And yeah the hole on the intake is normal, it stops a vacuum effect on the air, which prevents loss of power when you are quickly on then off the power.
