Hey guys, this is aimed at the R guys and gals or anyone with a remapped GTI.
I was running my car on V-Power as much as possible. The odd occasion I have had to use momentum, which doesn't seem to effect economy but does seem to reduce performance a tiny bit. Nothing you could notice unless you have a WOT.
Recently with the crap weather I have eased up on my throttle....a bit so the gains are even less noticeable, but being a good Boy Scout I went to Shell today to fill up and it was 119.9 a litre for V Power. I filled up with a frown on my face, then drove past a tesco on the way to work. Momentum is 106.9!!!!!
Now I'm not sure the performance is worth the gain at that price difference.
What are you guys using?

Having been brainwashed by monkeyhanger even before I'd got my R I plumped straight for Momentum as a)it's cheaper than V Power yet still 99RON(?) and b) Tesco is nearer than Shell for me.
I've not tried anything else in the car and my GTI ran quite happily and economically on Sainsburys 95RON.
Current long term average in the R is 29mpg but that was with a few longer journeys, the last couple of tanks have been around town and 23mpg.
Ouch.
About the same as my workmate's R32 but without the nice noise or expensive repairs (yet). I think he's spent about £2k this year on general repairs, servicing and maintenance to keep it in A1 condition. Not that it's got anything to do with this thread so I'll just shut up now. :lipsrsealed:

Filled up with first ever tank of Momentum last night at 111.9p due to necessity. Normally always use V Power at 119.9p but interested to see if there is any discernible difference in terms of how the engine feels compared to V Power.

I genuinely get 2mpg less using V-power rather than Momentum when I give the throttle a good mashing, but it doesn't feel any less smooth or powerful. If driving relatively sedately it makes no odds to the mpg whichever one i'm using. I leave the car in Race. I get poorer mpg still on the 97 flavour premiums like Esso Supreme or Sainsburys own premium and I can feel the drop in potency (it's not huge, but noticeable).
On the commute for my new job, Tesco isn't handy (we have a big extra very near us at home, but it doesn't have a garage) and Shell is, so I currently buy V-power at 113.9p/L.

Don't drive an R but I have always used tesco 99 in my previous performance cars (911 & E63 V8) always found it better than v power including price

Remlapeel is getting momentum a penny a litre cheaper than I could get standard 95RON. Best fuel prices around Tyneside seem to be around 107.7p/L of 95RON at Esso/Shell/BP (all the Essos seem to be about the same price, Shell and BP can vary about 6p/L in a 20 mile radius. Premium (V-power, or whatever else seems to be a constant 6p/L more than the 95 at any particular garage around me). Haven't seen momentum less than 112.9p/L on my travels, and there isn't a handy fill up for it near my new job - V-power will do. Getting 34mpg instead of 32mpg is the equivalent of a 6p/L saving if the 2 fuels are the same price.

Try and always use tesco. Not only because I have a tesco club card but as others are noticing, its the same price for super unleaded as everyone else sells normal, unless you get your normal from Asda!

Mine normally gets fed Vpower and the odd splash of Momentum given my dislike to giving Tesco any of my hard earned.
Never really notice the mpg on mine as it doesn't exactly get an easy life or a regular routing and i use the Polo for 50+mpg motoring

It's not just about octane, have these cheaper supermarket fuels got the effective detergents/lubricants to keep the fuel system and intake valves, head etc clean? I was scared away from using them a few years ago because of this issue but it may be a different story now.

I've used supermarket fuel for years and years and never had a single issue. I've had a job which has taken me past a tesco station that sells momentum so I've been running that but I will have to go back to standard 95 soon as no one sells super around here. Well I can get it but it's well out of my way to get it.
It was a consideration that helped sway me to the GTI rather than the R or Leon Cupra as they are are listed as requiring super.
