Neither would I - colour out of the equation, the standard MK7 GTD looks better than the standard GTI (not a fan of the Austins or the lipstick in the headlights) or the R (plainer front end and not a fan of the Cadiz).
IMO: Lapiz blue is the best colour for the R, carbon grey best colour for GTD/GTI.
MK3 Golf was an abysmal car, the only proper rustbucket VW made - my mates dad bought one new and it was pretty much rotted through at 8 years old when my mate got his mitts on it.

Nope, I didn't either. At the time budget didn't stretch to ED35 though.

It always makes me laugh when I hear people say the GTD is better looking than the GTI. For gods sake they are bloody identical apart from a stupid coloured strip at the front and different alloys, both of which most people wouldn't even notice.
Anyway the GTI is better looking with the split exhausts
-
^ that. Some people are a bit biased here.

^ that. Some people are a bit biased here.
Or that from 3 sides the GTD does look better (lack of "stupid coloured strip"), and that for most people the alloys have a bigger visual impact than a pipe on each side on the rear vs twin pipes on one side.
The GTD got by far the best looking standard alloys. I'm habitually an options tightarse (i consider them dead money when the depreciate 2.5 times heavier than the base car and most won't have a massive impact on your driving experience), but I disliked the Cadiz so much on the R I was willing to spend almost £900 to get alternative shoes. Was nothing to do with size either, i'd have had 18" Prets (if there was such a thing) over 18" or even 19" Cadiz.
I don't feel like i'm being biased when i'm in an R and prefer the look of a GTD.

So like you did with your R, you spec the better wheels on the GTI (which are probably the pick of the entire range) then problem solved.
Anyway what really makes the car visually more appealing is the last letter on the badge , 'I'. That's all that's important   :smug: :smug:

Not keen on the Santiagos as a GTI alternative, the last badge or the only badge, i'd have "R" over "I" - if only to have access to that Lapiz Blue (always been a fan of a strong blue car colour), and if tailpipes are your point of attraction for the GTI over the GTD then 4 is better than 2 surely? The back of the R420 is going to look like a church organ.

The only model I chose that matched what I had was the mk5 (I prefer the black contrast bits of the standard GTI to the colour coded ED30 aside from the huge black rear bumper thingy).
The mk7 I chose pretty close to what I had, but that was my first ever new car.

Not sure about Mks 1 to 6, never really paid that much attention to Golfs in the past. But as for the Mk7, mine is quite obviously the best looking

I've had two MK3s last one was the 16v Anni in my profile pic- granted it was rusty but fixed that up and it flew through all the MOTs, not bad for a 18 year car which was used for commuting 20k miles a year.
I think they become a love-hate affair once you own one, only Golf I don't like is the MK4. My mrs has a 2007 MK5 GT since new and she still loves it, although I keep hinting for her to get a MK7 GTD now :)

So they're not identical then?
I'm not old enough to know about the differing models between Mk1-Mk3. Though I do know of a white MK1 GTI cabrio which looks incredible.
MK4 - R32 Blue
MK5 - R32 Blue
MK6 - R White
MK7 - Red or White GTD
It pains me that the GTD is the best looking MK7 (in my opinion). What VW dropped the ball with the alloys, exhausts and that red line on the GTI. The exhausts just look a bit small and lonely when they're spaced out like that.
As for the R... I'm not quite sure how they ended up with the body styling after the stellar work on the GTD/I - it just doesn't sit right with me. I much prefer our GTD in the looks department - though all that is forgotten once I'm in the R's seat!

Interesting debate about the alloys, and it just goes to show how our eyes and minds are all different! Personally, I think the GTD alloys aren't very nice, the Austins are OK but not great, I really don't like the fussy Santiagos and I think the 18" Cadiz are awful. The only really nice looking wheel design is the 19" Pretorias on the R in my opinion, and it's all due to the same issue with each of the other designs. Personally, I can't stand the black barrels, I think it removes any definition in the design (apart from the diamond cut face of course), and they never look clean. They scratch/mark easily, even with soft Wheel Woolie brushes and the awful brake dust specs accumulate in the channel just behind the spokes, even with regular cleaning.
I've been very tempted to have the wheels refurbed in all silver but just can't justify the expense.
Overall, I think the R is the best looking of the MK7's, but I do prefer the GTI over the GTD. In my Tornado Red car, I actually like the red complementing stripe through the grille/lights and the single exit pipe either side at the back.
-
I'd largely agree with the above (RE the wheels). I do think the GTD Nogaros are lovely and as for the GTI wheels I much preferred the MK5 Monza design over what's come since. Not a fan of the black inserts for all the reasons already mentioned.
The MK7 R Pretorias are a gorgeous wheel IMO, the best of the lot by miles.
-
19" Talladega off the mk6 IMO are the best wheel veedub have ever done on a Golf. However Helios on a golf look mental!

I'd agree with that actually Neil. Even better in silver on a Rising blue Scirocco R.

I'm with that. Talladegas are really good looking wheels. I like them in silver against some colours, black against others and darkish grey looks good with silver.
I did threaten to get a set on my last mk7 but my VW leaning colleagues ridiculed me asking why I'd take a backward step - despite it still being a current wheel on the Scirocco.
It also puzzles me why the Cadiz gets so much negativity - it's hardly the most dynamic looking wheel in 18" with the standard Golf offset (which it shares with all the current mk7 wheels in looking too far into the arches but amplified by the huge front bumper on the R) but it's just an updated Talladega design and is inoffensive enough. All manufacturers seem to be pushing polished alloys with dark inners now and most of the aftermarket too. I think car colour comes into it mind you, the black and polished look contrasts well with certain colours and is a bit lost on others. The same with Pretorias - with some colours they look really, really good and with others they just sort of vanish.
Unfortunately those godawful channels behind the spokes really get on my nerves on all the mk7 wheels. Obviously they're there for a reason other than raising our blood pressure when cleaning but... Grrrrrrr!
-
I love my Santiagos (admitedly not quite so much at cleaning time, but if you keep on top of it they're not too bad).

^^^ Are the black spokes there for strength? It just looks far too cluttered for me.
Without the black spokes that would be a winner.

I don't know the answer to that but I reckon you're right. Some extra rigidity is probably a good thing with the state of the roads. To some extent I also agree with you about them looking a bit cluttered but I still love the look! Try squinting
