There is a bit of a write up in the current VW Driver mag too.

There is a bit of a write up in the current VW Driver mag too.

I was just about to post up the same thing!
Mine arrived the other day and it was an interesting read but as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

It'll be an interesting car for sure, Leon Cupra dynamics in a Golf 'special edition' package - what's not to like?!!! (aside from the funny angled bumper add ons that look a bit like one of those ugly fish at the front end).
The power of an R with the character of the GTI (hopefully therefore minus some of the narcissitic owners that reside in a certain place). The only downside will be traction off the line, and possibly the lack of back doors if you really need a four door - but at the end of the day a ClubSport should be true to the original ethos and be minimum weight and therefore a 3 door.

I understand if the Clubsport is only 3 doors due to the clubsport name and track oreintation  of the car.  But if it is only 3 doors with no 5 door option available, they have made my decision a lot easier as to which car I go for next year.  I will be looking for a 5 door car and was seriously considering a clubsport or R.  If it is true the Clubsport is 3 doors only, I will look more seriously at the R.

The mag article says VW are hinting that it will be three door only.
Time will tell, I'm sure we will know soon enough.

Can someone tell me when the special edition GTI's began to appear and were they here before the introduction of the R? The point i'm trying to make is that, is there still room in the line up for the clubsport? If you do a quick price comparison on DTD between a bog standard GTI 5dr DSG and an R 5dr DSG there is only a £4,000 difference which is not huge. So at what price point are they going to set the Clubsport and why would anyone choose it over the R if it ends up being only a couple of grand cheaper? Your getting AWD and an extra 40 or so bhp with the R which is well worth the premium IMO.

Given the crisis that VW currently find themselves in, and with what we have been hearing, it sounds like they will most likely shelve the R400 at this current time. However, why can't they introduce an RS for example? If they can eek out 400bhp from the current 2l engine then surely a few tweeks here and there could mean an increase in bhp from the current 300 to lets say 330 - 340. They could then introduce a slight facelift, different exhaust and the bucket seats from the clubsport at minimum cost.

Sorry this is really long winded but I think instead of a special edition GTI, they should be introducing a special edition R. If they statrted at £34k or so i'm sure it would be massively popular.

Just my thought for the day

Mk1 Campaign

They've always done special/limited edition GTi's.

The R isn't a special edition GTI rather than just another model.

I reckon the Clubsport will be around £32k in line with the Focus RS?

So more expensive than the R? That doesn't seem to make sense

The more choice the better. If anything the special edition models have become less common from VW over the years. I think I think the Clubsport looks interesting but wish it was more extreme.

An R with similar spec to the CS would be more than £32k wouldn't it?

Craig, without me writing a 30 page essay on the subject and boring everyone to sleep, lets just say VW has never been exactly linear about its Special Edition Golfs.
The actual Golf model cycle can vary quite a bit and overall market conditions will dictate what special editions they punt out.
As Neil says, the R isn't anything special and just carries on a long line of uber Golf that sits above the GTI.
The GTI moves about in the range according to market conditions too - in the mk2 days it was the best seller (in the UK), in the mk3 days it was a duffer and in the mk4 days it was a trim level, the mk5 revived it as a cult car when VW saw hot hatch sales rocket and all they had to offer was a Leon... and so it goes on.

The R borrows its blue trims from the 1980's VW Motorsport department - anyone remember the 1990 G60 Limited? 4wd, supercharged.
Then there's the GTI itself. Many models we didn't ever see in the UK, especially in the '80s heydays when VW UK wasn't even owned by Volkswagen. We didn't get the G60 at all, we didn't get the Wolfsburg Editions, the Fire & Ice editions etc etc.
So yes, VW has been producing special GTI's almost as long as they've been producing the GTI (Pirelli/Campaign, Oettinger, 20 Million Edition all from the first two generations of Golf to name just a few more).
Then there's the Rallye which played a very small part in the UK due to very limited numbers but became a cult car in itself.

Since the mk3 days and the VR6 slotted in above the GTI, followed by the VR6 engined V6 (plus V5), the R32 then the R (which only came into being as turbo engines developed and V6s became the enemy of the polar ice caps).
So we've always had all these overlaps.
The first Anniversary was the 20th - same power as a regular GTI and a 110BHP Diesel engine included on the continent, just a few fancy trim specs.
25th Anni also saw the Diesel reappear, the petrol got more power and it was a popular model yet VW also had an R equivalent in the range- the V6 and the R32 just waiting in the wings.
30th Anni - hugely popular because of the detuned R engine, and at almost the same time in Europe the Pirelli appeared in homage to the mk1 Pirelli/Campaign - yet the R32 was also in the range.
35th - a bit of an afterthought 'special' in many ways but again, up against the R and not a massive price difference between them as the R got leather as standard around the same time.
40th? At least VW are doing something a bit different with this one compared to the 35th - but by now the range is becoming very diluted.
You can't really look at what models become cult cars on the second hand scene as that's not really in the engineers brief - VW just want a bit of publicity and to sell new cars; once the model has run its cycle then all eyes are on what follows as far as the shareholders and management are concerned.

So what happended?

All a bit quite on the Clubsport front, I thought around the MY16 announced changes, we would see some info.

Guess they have bigger issues at the mo though.

Also got my eye on one of these rather than an R or Focus RS, but nothing much happening.

Anyone spoke to any of the dealerships?

Dealers are still saying taking orders from January

OK, well jumping ahead a bit further, assuming a good review on these, and a fair list price (slotted between R and GTI PP), what do you think the chances of a discount will be?

I'm guessing they are not limited in numbers, so I may wait for the first lot to come through this time before ordering, especially when you can get an R for such a good rate at the mo.

Our MK7 GTI will be 3 years old in June (one of the first UK ones) and I want to change it about that time, always have and private cash sale, so not sure what to do.

Had 3 GTi's from same dealer including this one, with reasonable discount, but not sure will get much initially on one of these.

I went through CarWow Dave. No commitment to buy, still able to haggle, and you'll get a good indication of the discounts you can expect.
