Title: False R's?
Post by: mistertee on 14 October 2015, 20:46
I've seen at least 2 "R''s in the past few months.  R badge on the front, R badge on the back... and 2 exhausts.

Am I looking at an elaborate fake?

2 exhausts, one each side (GTI) or 2 on the left (GTD)? Front fogs and fins around them?

Someone spent a fortune a while back making a 1.2TSI Golf look like a Lapiz R - they swapped out pretty much everything but the grey headlining. It may still be on ebay looking for a buyer.

That would be the R-Line, there are a few round here, also have single DRLs, 17"rims

The upside of the R-line imposter is maybe would-be thieves will mistake the real R for it and leave it alone.

Or I wonder if there's many R-lines nicked by mistake.

Aha! I didn't know about the R line.

That's not confusing at all is it?  Why don't they chose a different letter?

Same as BMW (M) and Mercedes (AMG), what was once a tuning division has become a trim line.

A great shame.

Audi have done it for a few years now with the "S Line" so I guess VW are just following suit.

The "R line" is nothing new. There was a B6 Passat R line back in 2008/9, which was an S model with a body kit and wheels. There was a version of the B7 Passat, as well as R line models of the current Golf, Scirroco, Passat, Tiguan and Touareg.
