I like, an idiot, put then earth from the -ve battery lead to the starter motor
(http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m318/hardmonkeys/image_7.jpeg) (http://s107.photobucket.com/user/hardmonkeys/media/image_7.jpeg.html)
Instead of the gearbox bell housing, the starter was earth through the main loom...in effect melting then wires
Options now, do I replace the loom, or repair it, rang around a few places today, see what options I have...
What do you recommend?

No-one?

Personally I'd replace the loom if you can find one.
If not you can put new wires in (get the correct thickness and colour codes) and crimp the ends, then complete test loom with multimeter, though this is quite laboursome and wires and crimp tool are not free either.
I would not just patch up the loom with short bits.... if it was just a single broken wire you could solder and shrink hose is as it won't have mechanical stress on it but since it's a fair few if not all I would not go down that road.

Fair comment, thanks for replying. I'm on the lookout for a loom, if you know of one going, keep me in mind. Thanks again
-
either way you go is a pain.
If it were me i would replace the loom but if you end up just splicing new wires in don't use crimp connectors as they will fail later at some point, better to solder, heatshrink and then insulate.

Looks like the way to go then, will see what the auto electrician says tomorrow also, really didn't fancy taking the engine back out again, and stripping it down, still, if I want to do it properly and safely, itmneeds to be done
-
When I said crimping I did not mean to fix existing wires and crimp a short bit to it but to remove the pins from the plugs, put in a new wire, end to end and crimp on a new pin on both ends and lock in plug again.
-
That's a lot of work isn't it, it'll be quicker to replace the whole look, I've got a auto sparky coming at midday to have a ganders
-
As predicted, he said it's better to find a new harness.
So that's the next job
-
it doesn't look to bad to repair in the first pic but going by the second pic its toast. much better result to replace the whole thing.
-
Yeh, I was all for repairing it, until I starting revealing it fully...just got to find a loom now! Turning out to be more difficult than first thought.

Found a loom, bought a engine hoist, just waiting for the time and weather to get started again. Hopefully won't be long
