Well, as the title says, driving to work this morning, going round a bend to find a couple of young scroats on the wrong side of the road doing waaay above the 30mpg limit and heading straight for me. Front assist alarm went off and car started to automatically brake heavily, and I steered to avoid what I thought was going to be an off side collision, only for them to squeeze though somehow without hitting me, but in taking avoiding action, my nearside front alloy hit the kerb - with a sickening bang !
Got out to find a tear in the very outer layer of the type wall (not too deep), and a chunk out of the alloy rim - the rims, that BTW, I have kept absolutely mint for over 2 years without a single mark on any of them. To say I'm pi55ed, is an understatement
Needless to say, the car was long gone before I could look back to get a registration number. This is what I'm left with - I'm so mad at the moment

I know there are a few members on here from my neck of the woods (Cheshire), so does anyone know where I'd get this fixed, or is it a send to Lepson's job ? Obviously it's not a smart repair as I think that some filler metal needs to be welded in the gash before turning the face back down with a diamond cut lathe ? I'm obviously concerned about the finished repair 100% matching the existing alloys, so can anyone recommend anyone, and have an idea approx how much and how long the repair would take ?
As regards the damage to the tyre, well it's not too bad, but its on a Bridgestone that's done over 18,000 miles, so all 4 will need replacing soon anyway, which leads me too another question (which I know has been asked to death).
Obviously I won't be replacing the tyres with tombstones again, and think I have narrowed the choice down to 4 tyres - Good Year F1 Asymmetrical, Michelin Pilot Sport 3, Continental Sport Contact (4 or 5 ?) and Dunlop Sport Maxx RT.
Now I've had the Goodyears on a previous Golf and they were superb, but I've read a few reviews that state the side walls are too pliable, and very prone to damage ? Heard good things about the Michelin, but according the official ratings, they are average at best on the economy & noise rating ? Not too sure about the other two only that a few members on here have mentioned them. All seem to be within £10-£25 a corner price wise between each other, so I'd rather purchase based upon actual real life performance and reviews rather than best price (have never skimpt on tyres). BTW, the tyre must have a rim protector as fair play to the Bridgestones, there's is quite a good one and I think have saved my rims a couple of times in the last two years.
I don't need ultimate performance as I'm in my 50's and the car leads a rather sedate life with the occasional burst rather than bulls out all the time, so am looking for something that's quieter and much less prone to wheel spin and tramping than the tombstones, but with similar or better economy and lifespan (if I ran the Tombstones down to the legal limit, I'd have got well over 20,000 miles, as they still have 4.5mm all round on them). Does such a tyre exist or am I asking too much ?
Any advise on both topics greatly appreciated.

Gutted for you Andrew. I'm no help on the wheel refurb but I have researched tyres as mine will soon need changing. The Asymmetric 1's had soft sidewalls which were prone to damage/bulging but the Assy 2's sidewalls are much stiffer. I ran the Assy 2's on my ED30 without issue. I will be fitting SportContact 5's to mine. They are regularly at the top of group tests. They are softer than some other tyres but I do small mileage so this doesn't bother me.

Prestige Wheels,Unit 1,106 Richardson Street,Stockport SK13JL.
I should be on commission the number of people I have sent their way. They did a good job on one of my wheels.Around £120 a wheel.

That's crap, but it could have been a lot worse - try Wrc at Bamber Bridge Preston, had some monza's done there and they do a good job - 10% forum discount mk5gti forum - get the price/quote then ask for the forum discount

I've only got good things to say about Dunlop SportMaxx RTs. A well wearing tyre that got rid of all tramping even with a DTUK box fitted.
Think monkeyhanger had some issues with the sidewalls on them on his Scirocco though but mine were faultless.

Thanks guys for the responses. Andy, was the repair on your a Diamond cut ?
I guess it's not a while you wait repair, so how did you go on whilst they had your wheel - did you just run an a space saver or did you have a spare alloy ?
-
Yes it was a diamond cut a Monza shadow. If you ring them they will ask you to email a photo and they can give you a price.I dropped wheel of and ran on one of my winters for a week.
They did a good job.Your damage doesn't look as bad as mine was.

Similar thing happened to me on Friday night... Gutted. I managed 23,005 miles before damaging them. A moron overtook a parked car which was on his side of the road, and I had to swerve to miss him. Duffed up a kerb and a rather chewed rim later...

Luckily I drive past Rhino Alloy Wheel Repair every day on my way to/from the office so I'll be dropping it off there this week. They have the full diamond cut machine and I've seen their work, I know they do a good job.
Gutted though.

Know exactly how you feel mate.

I feel your pain, hope you get it sorted soon.

I've got conti 5s on mine and they are a great tyre. Only problem and its a small one is the kerb rib protector is virtually non existent compared with the conti 2s I had before. To be honest though no rim protection would stop any of the two pics in this thread.
-
Nightmare mate, but at least you avoided a collision with them - although that would have offered an opportunity to give them an earful!
Perhaps not helpful, but to suggest a 5th option - Vredestein Sessanta XL. I swear by them, on my DTUK'd GTD they are spectacular, and the quietest tyre I've ever used (67db). They are also typically the cheapest of the lot. They also have rim protection, but not sure how it compares to your bridge's.

One thing VW does generally do is offer a tyre with a fair bit of rim protection. Not sure if it would be in my consideration when choosing a tyre, but i'd be glad to have it if i'd picked a good tyre with a fair bit of rim overhang by sheer luck.
Sootchucker: I had a smaller gash in my tyre when my Scirocco got pushed up a kerb while parked, and the insurance company had no qualms in replacing it on safety grounds - i'd replace it for my own piece of mind or at least stick it on the back.
replacement on my MK5 Golf 170TDI GT (that tramped no end before replacement of the Bridgestones it came with) and the Scirocco 170TDI (which didn't tramp on the Pirelli P7s).

I went to Prestige Wheels, must have been a bad day for them because the wheel I got back was terrible. And they tried to fob me off, which is what really annoyed me, and when I got the wheel back the second time it was better but not perfect.
Avoid. It's a waste of £120.
-
Sorry they did a poor job I think I'll cease recommending them then in future although the wheel they did for me was good.
-
I've kerbed my alloys twice. You would be surprised how good a fix-up job you can do with some multi grit sandpaper and a spray lacquer from Halfords. My damage is only noticeable if you go looking for it :-)

^^^^^ this. And Michelin PS3's are the tyre of choice for me.
