Had my windscreen replaced today and used the opportunity to try and stop that damn metallic ringing noise that sporadically starts and stops. I'm have had this issue with both my GTI and R and it's driving me insane.
First thing on note, it is categorically the sound actuator rattling. If you gently tap the metal which holds the device, you can hear a metallic tap.
I tried various pads and other things to bolster the device to no avail, it feels like the metal is to thin to support the device.
So, I have removed the sound actuator completely (weight saving bro!) and hey presto, completely buzz free!

You know what.... I'm getting the same intermittent "buzzing" noise from beneath my windscreen. Never had this problem on my previous GTi... Is it easy to remove remlapeel?

Yeah extremely, that's part of the problem. It seems like it was an after thought and they haven't done it well.
There are 3 clips holding the surround in place which you can literally remove with your fingers. Followed by a single 10mm bolt and unveil the cable.
The guys at silver shield even gave me a cable tie to hold the wires tight so they didn't start to rattle!

Thanks for that... I'll persevere with it for a little longer in the hope that the rattle settles down, but if not I shall be following in your footsteps.... Thanks for the info.

Best thing I ever did to my GTI. Apart from finding the noise artificial, fake and tiresome it also caused the intermittent buzzing on acceleration. Once I disconnected it I felt like I had my car back
