Title: FMIC - Coloured Pipes?
Post by: eug2huge on 07 October 2015, 12:26
Hi guys,

I'm looking at taking my GTI up to stage 2.

As well as installing a sports cat and a GFB DV+ I am thinking of purchasing an Airtec front mounted inter-cooler.

My question is, is there any point in having coloured pipes? I.E. can you actually see them once fitted? Has anyone done this mod/got any pics?

Many thanks

Ive got an Airtec intercooler with red pipes (id have chose black but i got it brand new off a guy who had bought and never fitted), you cant see them when looking under the bonnet unless you look for them. Only obvious from underneath with cover removed!

Have you thought about Forge front mount? I can supply you one with a discount from RRP.

Thanks for the info. I thought as much.

I've seen a pic of a MK7 with red pipes which you can see from the front (think the grill is slightly wider). The Mk6 grill must be narrower..

What sort of money are we talking for the Forge? It would be hard to compete with the Airtec price.

The Airtec intercooler sits in the standard position, sandwiched behind air-con radiator and infront of fan housing. You CANNOT see it, or the pipes once fitted. Even though they paint Airtec on the front, like mine has, it cannot be seen!

The forge is a twintercooler, so you keep the standard intercooler and add a true front-mount (it sits right behind the lower grille) which adds the extra cooling and flow required for higher powered cars. Its also a LOT easier to fit than the usual replacements like Airtec, which is a pretty major job to do!

The RRP for Forge is £693.

Hi Mate,

The intercooler I am talking about is the twin front mounted Airtec version, £445.

Didnt even know they done a twin cooler! If it looks as good as Forge, then the money talks!

The Airtec i have certainly is a top piece of kit!

Yes, I like the idea that it's a bolt on.

Do you have just the upgraded intercooler or twin setup as well?

I guess my question still stands then, can you see the pipes on the front mounted intercooler?

I have the stage 2 Airtec intercooler, so its a larger capacity/ better flowing so no need to also have a 2nd intercooler. Theyre only for running a standard intercooler..

I've bitten the bullet and ordered one, silver with red pipes.

Will put some pics up when fitted. Wasn't brave enough to fit a complete replacement by myself so though this would be a better option plus they look cool through the grill!

DP with sports cat and stage 2 booked in for the 24th at AMD Essex. Currently running at 261bhp / 278lb/ft  so it will be interesting to see what the final results will be..

Fitted it Saturday morning. Was a bit ticked off as the instructions supplied were only for a mk5 but thought fair enough, it's hopefully a similar setup... But no! Completely different. Offered it up to the car and there was a metal sub frame in the way! Phoned Airtec for some help and I couldn't believe it, they'd never actually tested the fitting themselves, only relied on hear say from other garages. (WTF!) Shocking!! Long story short, I told them they need top sort their sh*t out and get one in to write up some new instruction. They offered to fit it for me for free in the week but I've got a tune up booked next weekend so thought I'd crack on. Anyway, I called Awesome GTI to see if they had fitted one before and they had. I basically had to cut a metal drop down part of in order to mount the new intercooler (just wanted clarification before I started mutilating my beloved car!).

Looks great in the flesh but couldn't really get a nice pic on my phone. Very 'pokey' I like this!

Excuse the dodgy looking bricks under the wheels. I had it up on axle stands and was just trying to add another safety blanket.
