Title: Footwell lights - How many?
Post by: Mag_Pie on 06 October 2015, 08:18
With the mornings staying darker on my way to work and now noticing the interior lighting, I appear to only have footwell lighting on the drivers side.  I'm right in thinking that there should be something on the passengers side as well aren't I?

I had a look on that side and I appear to just have a whole where I think the light should be.  I'm going to mention it at service time, I just hope that they believe I've not swiped it myself.

Yeah you should have 1 in both the passenger and drivers side.
I wouldn't wait for service personally as that is generally 12 months later.

Yep, as p3asa says there are two foorwell lights at the front of the mk7.
Here's a pic showing locations (for LHD vehicle)

Have you had a feel around in the hole?  Perhaps the light fitting has become unclipped and gone back up into the cavity.  If it is completely missing, then as said, I wouldn't wait, I'd get it looked sooner.

I was having a play around with the footwell lights last night and found that the passenger side light has a really short cable connector going to it, if someone else has been fiddling with the light I can easier see it being pulled back through the hole because of the tension on the cable.

Those lights are pushed in from the front so I really doubt it could have gone behind the trim. I cant see the light falling out as the wire to the light on the passenger side is very tight, as has been said above.

Have you had the car serviced recently? There is a high chance that somebody nicked it. Or if it is new, most probably they haven't fitted it at factory.

I currently have a GTD but I'm due to collect an R in December, are the footwell lights and the door sill lights the same colour on the R as they are on the GTD ?

No. The ambient lighting is:

GTD - white
GTI - red
R - blue

Not yet, I'm wondering if it was a case of someone desperate for a spare part in a rush as it was pre reg. I need to have a good luck to make sure that it isn't hidden up in the dash first. I got the car in the 'light night' months so never really experienced full on darkness.

Thanks for the diagram dv52, I now know exactly where to check.

No. The ambient lighting is:

GTD - white
GTI - red
R - blue

Footwell lights are all the same across all models though (white LED)

This.

I swapped out my mk6 GTI footwells for red LEDs and thinking of changing the R's footwells for blue.  Are the mk7 light units sealed with the bulbs soldered in, or can you just swap out the bulb as before?  Anyone changed theirs?

Feel the interior just needs a little bit more blue accent.  Footwells could be the answer.  Course it could end up looking tacky.

My bad, should've specified only door sills and door stripes are different colors based on model. Footwell lights are all white.

There have been a few folk changed theirs Bec. I don't think its a case of just changing the bulbs. I'm sure you have to buy the enclosures. Someone has posted the parts number required.
I'm on my phone or I would search for you.

Cheers Steven, that's what I thought, that you had to replace the whole unit.  I'll do a search, see if I can find the part numbers.  I do like the white but think blue might add something extra.

it was me. I swapped the footwell Led's on my R as soon as I got it as in my opinion the White Led's ruined the blue ambiance of the the door and sill trim  :undecided:
You will need 2 of these.

Brilliant!  Cheers JB, much appreciated.  Did you order them from TPS?

Am I right in assuming the above holders come with white bulbs that'll I'll need to switch for blue LEDs from eBay?  Any link to the LEDs you bought?  Finally,  any pics of your blue foot wells?  Sorry for all the questions.

I ordered from my dealers parts dept. As long as the stuff you want is in stock at VW's warehouse it will be delivered next day. Yes, Led's were ordered from eBay and still going strong £5-6 for four Led's P&P free

That's really great, thanks for all the info and link.

The blue footwells really do add something that's currently missing. The white light is a bit too cold and harsh. I like the little mods.

Blue LEDs ordered.  Will order holders tommorow.  Thanks again.

No problem   that's what forums are for. I love the Blue glow in mine now. I think VW should have done this from the outset also think the Stainless Steel sill trims should have been standard too as it was a massive scuff target without them.

Haha, see what you've done now?  Sill guards are next on my list after footwells!  The standard blue lit ones are pretty but not enough to protect from scuffs as you say, and as I have a gravel driveway, little bits of stone are a nightmare for getting caught underfoot and marking the sills.

So next question - which sill guards did you buy? Seen some black ones on a post a while back that looked good.  Can't find it at the moment.

I think Sootchuckers fitted the Teflon ones. I had them on both my Scirocco's and they are really hard wearing. The still looked like new when mine went at 3 years old.

Fair enough.  I'll do my own dirty work

And after, blue footwell LEDs and R sill guards, I'm on the hunt for some decent mats possibly with R logo and/or blue piping or stitching.

Haven't looked anywhere yet, but if you JB, or anyone else has seen any nice ones, let me know.

Then that'll be the feet area sorted.

I like the look of them, and they would look great with on a black car, with that silver stripe.   Just wonder how hard wearing they are being vinyl.  Think they are similar to the other ones in that link.  There's also the Teflon ones you mention, but they are a bit ugly, but do the job I suppose.

Hmm, looks or practicality?   Probably go with the former and see how they stand up to the job.

Right that's enough, need sleep!

Saw some replacement LED interior lights in Halfords today. They had them in white and blue and looked to be a direct replacement to the standard bulb. Can't confirm if they are suitable for the Golf or not and price, I think it was £9.99 for a pair. Might be worth a look?

Have ordered the replacement for the oem footwell light units from TPS today.  Will be here tommorow.

Will swap out the tungsten bulbs for the blue LEDs ordered from ebay last night.  Always get my interior LEDs from ebay and always good.

Will fit this weekend.

I like the look of the sill covers, I did wonder what the point of the standard ones were given there position. I know they light up which looks nice but the actual sill is left totally exposed!

Double checked and there is definitely just an empty hole, I can't feel any cable/plug that should have something connected to it either!  Does the footwell light unit have a cable that connects father up inside the dash?

There should be some wiring with a plug on the end of it. Unfortunately it is really short and I suspect that left untensioned without the bulb holder to keep it in place it may be more than a fingers length away
I think a quick call to your supplying dealer is in order and let them deal with it !!
