Hi
just got my mk2 back on the road after been laid up for a month!
It broke down yesterday!!!
So here goes its been stalling at speed! I could be just pulling away or driving at 70mph and it feels like the fuel stops and I'm running out of gas, so I pull over and may be the second turn of the key and the car starts again and runs for another 10+ miles without a problem and it will do it again!!
It happend yesterday going on to the motorway but this time I couldn't get it started and had to call the AA. they tried to fix it but couldn't and towed me 20miles tried the car after he unhooked me and the car started!!!!!
The car is getting a good spark, and when you turn the ignition on the fuel pump primes!
anybody any ideas as this is a big problem, cant trust it!

Sounds like you've answered your own question. The fuel pump's not delivering sufficient fuel. Could be blocked filter or damaged fuel line or a duff pump. Either the lift or under car pump.
Does it run OK at low speeds, when there is enough fuel getting through?
-
yes runs fine most of the time but cuts out with no warning low or high speeds!!!

update
changed fuel filter and fuel pump relay, both main pump and lift pump are working as they should.
still cutting out
on to the next thing!
-
Can you whip a plug out when it fails again to determine weather it's fuel of spark?
Good luck

Check all earth connections.

When it's not working spray some Easy Start in the air intake to check if it's a fuel problem.
and...
Something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silverline-Ignition-Spark-Tester-270mm-633982-/121548515992?hash=item1c4cdb2a98:g:GgAAAOSwxYxUvjOD will show if the HT is working.

thanks guys
a wee update
I have a spark which made me go towards fuel
checked the fuel pump and lift pump both working ok!
changed the:-
fuel filter (still had the problem)
fuel pump relay (still had the problem)
ignition switch (still had the problem)
spark plugs (still had the problem)
air filter (still had the problem)
distributor with new hall sender, cap and rotor arm (car been running ok for the last week still have my fingers crossed)
think it might need timed because when you come off the gas the revs drop instantly and pick up is not smooth! although the revs sit steady at 950.

Replace the blue temp sender if you haven't already.

Is the Mass air flow meter secure? Are all the rubber bands that hold the air filter housing intact.? If the m a f moves about it gives a false reading.
