Title: First service
Post by: Snooze on 04 October 2015, 09:04
So my car recently ticked over the 6000 mile mark and i was wondering if perhaps I should have it serviced, as it is a new car? I'd be keen to hear people's thoughts. Thanks

Shouldn't it be serviced at 10k miles or one year, whichever is sooner.  Why would you do it before the scheduled service?  Are you having any problems with?

How old is it? If it's less than a year old i'd wait until it is. For my R I decoded to give it a 1500 mile "run in" oil change, but if you've waiting 6k miles, i'd wait the other 4, or 1 year, whichever is sooner.

As my 4100 mile R is currently in the middle of getting a new turbo, I suspect it will be having yet another oil change as part of the work.

My thoughts are the same as everyone elses - get it serviced at one year old or 10,000 miles. You should pay no more than 149 quid for this one.

No, no problems its 4 months old. Just read a few times it's good practice to service new cars after 6k. I probably wouldn't bother, but if everyone said I should I probably would!

I'm pretty certain your car will have long life oil in it anyway so I'd personally not bother dropping the oil until 12 months or 10k as per the other opinions above.
Unless you're planning on keeping the car for years and years and running it to starship mileage.
Some highly strung cars benefit more frequent oil changes and some owners just have OCD, but for general use (if you're not doing track days) just stick with the factory recommendations until it gets a bit older.

If something is going to fail at lowish mileage then it's because it's a faulty part and warranty will cover it.
Even MH's 1500 mile oil change didn't prolong his turbo's life.

How do you know that? It might've failed 1000 miles ago without it.

Took advantage of a really cheap Castrol Edge oil deal - for a £40 oil change I though "why not?". Would not have paid £150 to have VW do it though.

I think it was the actuatoron the turbo that was dodgy, that's what Chris' (mcmaddy's) VCDS scan revealed after the first EPC fault came up, so not likely to blow up and fragment into the engine. The Turbo was unavailable when that happened, and was back when the ignition was turned off and back on. Had a similar thing with my 2003 Polo 1.9TDI Sport, the turbo would not be functional 1 time in 10 you switched the ignition on. After a few weeks it was more like 50:50. They replaced that turbo at around 6k miles.
