Hi guys,
Wondering if those of you with the rear view camera fitted could take a look at this pic and tell me if it looks normal? Compare it to what you see in your cars?
I just noticed it yesterday that across the top of the image, it dips a little bit (black crescent shape across top of image) - see how it's not perfectly straight across?
I think what's happening is that "dip" is part of the boot/badge opening captured by the camera lens - the camera isn't lifting / popping out enough to clear the "obstacle". If I hop out of the car and manually lift the badge another couple of mm's, the image straightens up a bit...

I will try and look later today.

Mine dips a bit.

Hi Joe,
Here's mine, not the best picture but there is no dip at all on mine, it's perfectly straight across the top..

Maybe shade on the lens?
Camera probably has auto gain and shutter, all photos with distortion on top seem to be in relatively bright daylight.
-
The only image I have from the camera in my GTI looks straight.

I don't think its safe to reverse!! (https://flic.kr/p/rg3hzN) by Alastair (https://www.flickr.com/photos/techie_ali/), on Flickr

Thanks fellas.
I know it's a very simple issue, whether it requires the whole camera mechanism to be replaced I don't know. Basically if I stand at the back of the car and lift the VW badge another tiny bit then the image straightens. So it seems the camera doesn't lift/pop out quite enough to give it a totally unobstructed view. I also tried wedging a piece of paper between the badge and camera and that worked too!
-
Have you tried lubricating the opener mechanism in case it is simply a bit stiff and flipping open fully.
-
Good idea. I'll give that a go. Out with the WD 40. Anything to avoid the hassle of a trip to the dealers.
-
WD40 is not a lubricant!
You will merely wash out the grease that is left in there with it...
-
WD40 is a lubricant. I will get rid of grease though with may not be a good thing.
-
Better get some 'Teflon Plus' bike (cycle) lube spray from Halfords etc. Best dry lube spray to be found lubricates everything and causes no damage to rubber etc
-
Checked mine this morning Joe, and the black edge along the top is perfectly straight.
-
There is a very noticeable difference in the picture quality between MIB1 and MIB2 radios!

I'm proud to say mine doesn't droop

Thanks fellas. Looks like there's a mixture of quality out there. I haven't had a second to look at mine since. I'll give some lubricant a go and failing that I'll mention it to the dealers at some stage (it's not a biggie really).

Does that annoying box on the left always pop up for everyone? Seems to defeat the object of a rear view camera if half of the screen is blocked out? Mine comes on all of the time, unless I'm in a completely clear area...

Mine used to pop up and then the box around it would go clear after a short time, however it seems to have stopped doing it now for some reason.

I reported this issue to the dealer since and I'm getting the camera replaced next week.

Good news. Thought mine was looking a bit weird earlier this week but it was just a big drip of water in the image! Satisfyingly watched it drip off on the screen and normality was resumed.

Mines a bit wonkypiss but not enough to make me want to do anything about it. tbh I only ever glance at it as I use my mirrors more. Never had the bottle to reverse down my drive on just the camera.

What's wrong with your camera JB?
The camera I still find a novelty and I would not rely on it to any great extent. It's greatest use thus far is I can see if there's any of my cats behind the car when reversing in the driveway. The bloody felines have a habit of nonchalantly strolling over and strategically placing themselves right behind the car every time I want to reverse. Likewise it's useful elsewhere for ensuring there's no pedestrian or objects behind the car, but I find it's distance from objects warning to be a little off. No substitute for eyes and mirrors IMO.

Camera works fine. It has the same sag that JoeGTI reported. The only other small niggle is to do with the delay waiting to use the boot release when you take it out of reverse. Not an issue for you if you are driving but a pain for passengers who want get stuff out of the boot when I reverse onto the drive.
-
Not so interesting fact...
The cameras are manufactured here for VW by a company in the West of Ireland, a stones throw from me. But I've still had to wait for the replacement unit to come from Germany

I've not experienced the delay about the camera mechanism when accessing the boot, but that's probably because I usually drive and then get the stuff out of the boot myself more often than not, and by the time I get to the boot the camera has retreated back into position.
It was funny this morning as I was reversing in the driveway whilst my other half (who has only taken the R once when he nipped to the shop in it) was sitting in his truck waiting to leave after me. He waved me back to tell me that there was something wrong with the rear boot badge and that it was sticking out. I then told him about the reversing camera.

It would be nice if there was a switch to instantly return the boot release for those times when someone else wants to get into the boot. I suspect my situation is not that common though.

Well I had the camera replaced under warranty yesterday and it's now perfect. No wonky bendy image, perfectly straight... and it may be my imagination but the camera operation seems less noisy too (when it pops out of the badge).
On the downside, my car picked up a door ding while it was in the dealer's forecourt
-
Great re the camera. I wonder if the mechanism being louder on the older one was struggling to open it properly.
Gutted re the door ding. I absolutely hate taking my car to places like that for this very reason, far too tight. Are they going to sort it?
-
Yeah they are being very good about it, it will be sorted out at their cost. The paint is chipped on the door crease. Some inconsiderate arse - most likely another customer - obviously whacked their door off it and walked away.

Nooo! At least the dealer are sorting it.
Glad the cameras all sorted now. I find mine fairly quiet but have no comparison.
There's some unbelievably careless people about. They just don't care. I was actually sat parked up in my car when a woman in a the obligatory huge 4x4 pulled up and flung the door open and 'wham' straight into my passenger door. She looked at me through the window and sort of just apologetically shrugged her shoulders. Can't tell you how quick I was out of the car and inspecting it. Lucky for her, there was no damage!
