I want to lower my 8v by 40mm, but I dont want to spend a lot of wonga in the process.  Is it OK to just have lowering springs fitted with the original shocks??  If not, what are the disadvantages to doing this...?  I have already got a price for springs only (?160 fitted)... how much more would it cost for shocks as well...?

shocks are about 300 quid going up to over 500 for Koni's.

Then there's the labour charge.

Do the springs first - you/they can check your shocks whilst you're/they're doing this.

Worth swaping everything in the long run - handling, braking will improve.

depends on the condition of your shocks - they control the amount of damping you're getting

I guess being a Mk2 that the mileage is fairly high on your 8v, and so if you can afford it I'd definitely replace the shocks aswell.
As for lower budget kits, I would steer well clear, I had a budget boge kit on my old Mk1, they didn't even compare to the quality ride that the Koni's I replaced them with gave! At the end of the day, you get what you pay for...

when i brought my golf it had been lowered by 40mm, plus 15mm from the poly bushes, that was on standard shocks. The ride was a little naf,, very stiff, got the shocks now, well worth the money, expecially as ive got power steering. Lets be honest grannies are lovely, but they make bad cups of tea and dont make your car the bollox!!!!

Managed to sell her on ebay.  But only got a tenner.  I knew I shouldve put a reserve price on it.  Sh!t my mums gonna kill me  :-\

I think you should change your shocks for uprated ones. depends on how long they have been on your car, they were probably never changed?

If your going 40mm low this could probably burst your old standard shocks easily like mine did.

Its got 150K on the clock so maybe uprated shocks might be a good idea.  Just need to find the funds.

I also herd gas shocks are better than oil ones? True or not guys?

Gas shocks will give you a firmer ride than oil.
