Hi,
Anyone else having bother with the 19" Santiagos. I have had some issues with vibration driving at high speed and VW have confirmed that all 4 of my wheels are buckled..
No damage to the tyres (punctures, bulges etc) and no impact damage to the rims. I cant recall hitting anything so I am at a loss as to how I have managed to total 4 wheels.
Wished I had just bought the 18s and saved some $$ and had some rubber to actually protect the wheel.
Reckon they may have made them too lightweight to try and get good consumption/emissions results!!
Anyone else have any bother with them? Absolute joke if I have to replace 4 new wheels not covered by warranty.

That's not good. Even if you had hit something, the chances of all 4 wheels buckling is remote, surely. Maybe the were a defective batch?
If tyres and rims are unmarked worth arguing that there must be an issue with the wheels and the warranty route. Good luck in getting somewhere with VW.
-
VW already saying there is nothing wrong with the wheels.....
-
All 4?! and with no visible damage to the tyres or the wheels?!
How have they worked all this out?
-
How many miles have you done?
Unless you've been driving on rally stages there's little chance all four will be damaged so a second opinion would be an idea.
The Santiagos have all those little extra spokes to strengthen the wheels further so should be pretty tough really.
-
Everything is fine with my Santiagos (apart from some kerbing on one wheel :().
Who has said they're all buckled?
-
I've had it into a few VW garages all all said the same, at first it was only 2 out the 4 (front ones). When I complained to VW UK the managed or the local garage agreed to give me a set from the demonstrator to try to check the vibration was off the car.
VW have my wheels at the moment and now saying they have given them to a "specialist" and all 4 have buckles in them (to varying degrees).
Can has done about 28k miles - was one of the very first ones in the garage in 2013 so an early batch of alloys probably.
Mostly motorway driving or round town/low speeds.
Very disappointing if this is the strength of the alloys.
Will see what they say.. Seems a dodgy one and one they have to take seriously.
Disappointing though that all conversations I have had with them their opening line is "VW has sent a bulletin to advise that garages cannot replace wheels with buckles under warranty"
-
Had a similar thing happen to two of my Santiago's... Didn't detect any vibration whilst driving but I did notice that I was constantly losing tyre pressure on both rear wheels.
At first I thought it was down to a slow puncture, but when I took the wheels off to inspect further I noticed both had buckled.
I can remember running over a couple of "shallow" potholes at some point that could have contributed to them buckling, but at the time I thought nothing of it.
I've had numerous other 19" (& 20") alloys on other vehicles over the years but I've never had this problem before. Maybe I was just unlucky in this instance?

Should have got the Cadiz  Only kidding I love my Nogaro's but if I had an R I would have went for the Cadiz
-
Funny enough... I'm currently waiting delivery of a Golf R and have decided to stick with the original 18" Cadiz wheel rather than the 19" Pretorias. Hopefully the smaller diameter wheel is "less" prone to buckling (although I suppose there's no guarantee)
-
Out of curiosity are the 19"s made by Ronal as well like the 18"?
-
That's ridiculous. Sorry for your troubles.
Glad I didn't fork out the extra £1k for them now!
-
Just had the same problem with mine (29000m, 2013). One of them buckling front o/s was due to pothole damage, but the other one on the n/s rear I don't understand. One of them is being replaced under warranty(rust?), unfortunately not a buckled one. I'll be interested what VW say.

I take it they are replicas 'SANTIAGO-STYLE'

No idea but if the originals are not warranty covered why worry? Especially if genuine are prone to damage
-
You definitely got a point in this case.
I'd just steer clear of replacing again with 19s
-
I actually have no visible buckles like the previous picture - its only when you put them on a balancing machine you can see the inner edges are bucked apparently.
I noticed it through excessive vibration when driving at "motorway speeds" and thought there was a problem with suspension etc which I asked to get checked out.
VW have just called to say that VW UK will not support replacing them so the dealer is going to do nothing apart from a "contribution" towards an attempted repair.
Absolute joke if you ask me - I used to have an Audi S3 and completely smashed a pothole once and burst the tyre and dinged the rim but the alloy survived buckle free.
-
So VW are now saying that they will not assist me under warranty apart from a gesture towards refurbishment.
I am sticking to my guns saying it looks like a design issue or a material defect causing all 4 to buckle since the buckles are very slight and there is no damage to any of the tyres.
VW are justifying their course of action saying their policy is not to replace buckles alloys under warranty.. Doesn't mean much without some kind of back up to say they have reviewed and tested my wheels to verify they are fit for purpose and safe.
-
Have you been to a non-VW garage to determine if the wheels are optimally balanced?
-
VW have them just now and have sent them away for "independent inspection" which confirms they are buckled.
Would I gain anything else by taking them back and getting a second opinion?
I actually have a set of Santiagos off a demonstrator on my car just now so in no rush to go out my way to go back in and get them changed back.

I'd contact your local Ctizens Advice Bureau for details - small claims court case? Doubt the local garage would represent themselves and have any convincing technical knowledge to explain all 4 wheels being buckled through abuse. Even less likely VW UK would send anyone. Would perhaps take someone from the AA/RAC as an independent advisor to push your side of the argument in court.

Im an engineer and deal with structural stuff for my work.
If someone approached me with concerns about repeated & unexpected failure of safety critical components I would be negligent if I didn't properly investigate it to determine no underlying material defect or safety issue.
Thats what I'm wanting them to prove but they're just dismissing it as the solution is too expensive.
Just so disappointing after spending so much on a top end VW that they really don't give a f**k about helping.

Any update on this one?
