Title: 18" or 19"......
Post by: PD_GTI_MK6 on 15 September 2015, 14:32
Hi,

New DSG GTI MK6 owner here, I've had it for around 1 month and very pleased with it so far.

I'm thinking about replacing the stock 18" Monza wheels but I don't really want to change the springs or ride height if possible.

The obvious choice is to stick with like for like and go for 18's but do 19's really mess up the ride ?

Thanks.

Hi

Had 17,18,19 inch OEM wheels on my Golfs. 18's are the sweet spot imo, the car handles better and the ride is a little less crashy over poor surfaces as you have a bit more sidewall and less unsprung mass.

So I say stick with 18's.

I don't think the ride is much different on 19s and 18s. I'd get what you prefer the look of.

Contradicting reviews ! :)

I'm not really sure which way to go, I like the look of 19's but I'm not sure i want to risk messing with the ride.

Pick up a second hand set of 19s. Then can always sell them for roughly same money if you don't like them.

I recently went from 19s (Glendales) to 18s (Monza 2 Shadows). The ride is not massively differently, and certainly wasn't bad on the 19s. Having had both, my view is pick the wheels you prefer the look of as the ride is not massively different.

I find 18's firm but OK on rough back roads and have not damaged any on potholes. If 19's are any firmer would probably find them too much on the back roads of Lincolnshire!!

How much were the coilovers ?

I don't really want to spend loads.

I bought my first mk6 with 17's and changed to 18's pretty soon after.
No real difference in ride quality and I had several different sets of 18's over the time I had the car (seven sets I think?!!) using different brands of tyres.
Then I went to 19" BBS and again, no real loss of ride quality from the 18's.

Why the change from the rather nice and rare Glendales to the Monza's Nor?
I'd have loved a set of Glendales on mine but they weren't an option at the time and you never saw second hand sets come up for sale.

19" Glendales were optional on Edition 35's and later GTI's too.
