Title: Turbo kit for a MK3 16v - are there any?
Post by: general_piffle on 11 September 2015, 00:09
Hey, are there any decent turbo kits out there for the MK3 16v? I want to gain some pony, have a few quid to spend but not mega-bucks. Let me know your advice. Thanks.

No there isn't. You may find a kit on ebay but trust me don't get it.
You might find a manifold on a German website but it's all custom from there.
Educate yourself on turbo builds and make your own kit. It's not hard to be honest.

This website may be of some use to you :)

I wanted to turbo my 16v but ended up doing a 1.8t swap, If I could do it all again I would have done the 16v turbo it may work out more exspensive but its nice to have something different and I think their fantastic engines, they sounds gret too :P

A few quid to spend, try a few thousand +  As Mr Tweed said educate yourself.  There is tons of information on the net. For now get your flywheel lightened and balanced. Trust me you will like the results

Yep, I've been in touch with Mart over on the other forum who is going to sort me out when he's back from holiday. Does a lightened flywheel make the car more likely to stall or lumpy at low revs? How much higher is tick-over? Cheers.

Richard, thanks so much for the link! Nice idea but too rich for my tastes currently. Good to know what sort of money these builds command though.

Just stick at 20vt in it if your on a budget, it's a cheap conversion if you do it yourself.

20 Valve Turbo, or 1.8T as found in just about everything on a Mk4 Golf platform.

Ah cool, and that'll more or less go straight into the MK3?

Lets get this straight.  Despite what people say a 20VT conversion if you don't know how to do it is not cheap if done correctly by a good tuning company or simular.  Get your suspension,  braking, wheels/tyres etc up to scratch before thinking about a conversion.  Any rust, get that sorted.  In my eyes the conversion should be the last on the list. Lighten the flywheel and you will feel like the car had added 30bhp. If not just enjoy the car for what it is. Get it up to 160 ish bhp with basic bolt on mods (modified airbox with panel filter,  chip, lightened flyeheel, good non resonated exhaust etc) Add a 3.94 final drive and you will be laughing with a bit of port matching etc. Still not cheap tho but you pay for what you get my friend

It's not exactly a hard conversion, considering the guy wanted to turbo a ABF.

But if you have to go to a garage for a service or suspension change then I wouldn't bother

I think as the guy did not know what a 20VT it kind of suggests the later

'The guy' is reading this thread and started it looking for advice as well as ideas. You see I've been exclusively into bikes the past 25 plus years and only got into cars a couple of years ago. We all start somewhere.

Mechanically its not hard.
Most of it bolts straight up and there are so many now you can buy downpipe kits and brackets etc to remove all the fabbing side.
The tricky part is wiring it all up and getting it running right.
Some use the Mk4 management and splice it into the mk3 loom and electronics others go standalone for more adaptive high performance tuning.
You could do all the grunting to save money and seek paid help for the electronics as an option.
There is enough info out there to save a lot of time and money.
