Title: timing chain question
Post by: candywhite12 on 04 September 2015, 22:21
apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, did a bit of a search but couldn't find anything that answers this.

so my GTI is nearing 93K miles.  The manual says that the timing chain is to be checked on 55k miles and then every 20k or so and that there is no standard mileage that it needs to be replaced.  Hence i checked with my garage on 55k and then on 75k miles, they said it did not need replacing.  My next service is approaching and i will be asking them to check it again.

Not that I'm complaining but with 93k miles on the clock, does it make sense for the timing chain to still be working fine?  Are chains supposed to be lasting the lifetime of the car and simply checked every xx miles???

thanks in advance

The type of chain they are they do stretch. Most cars with that type of chain on once they get to 100k the chain is past its best and starts to rattle so is wortg changing. I cannot see the golf been any different.

Got an Astra coupe 2.2 (non-turbo) with a chain that has done 160k miles with no problems!! An VW idie near me says that he gets a few that need changing over 100k (changing all parts with labour he charges near £1k). I would see what the service throws up and take it from there.
