Guys,
If you looking for a full set of winter rims and tyres try your local VW dealer. I have just purchased a full set of new genuine VW Aspen 16" wheels with centre caps & Pirelli winter tyres fitted & balanced for £469.00 inc del.
The tyres on there own are around £65.00 each before fitting etc. Very impressed as they will fit the 'R' should I change cars at some point. I have always run winters ever since owning BM's but its more for the handling and braking in the wet winter months than driving around in snow.
The stopping distance from 30mph is approx 23ft less than on summers during the winter months

That is a good price

You sure they'll fit the R? I thought 17s were the minimum on an R/GTI PP.

You beat me to it. R and PP GTI need 17" wheels to accomodate the bigger brake components.

Well that's what I was told no issue for the next 2 yrs anyway. Check the label on your door pillar for tyres

They told you porkies. Would consider the deal for the missus' forthcoming A1 TDI Sport that comes on 16" wheels anyway. Is this a standard price or current offer for all dealerships? I wonder if TPS will do the customary 10% cheaper than the dealership? Perhaps not as the dealership will likely need to fit the tyres.

Officially these are £932 a set:-

I have no idea about the deals elsewhere I am afraid, talking to the parts manager he said they get 5 sets of winter wheels & tyres every year direct from VW at no cost to them. Usually mixed for the golf, polo, passat etc they never get sold as most don't bother over here. Due to the pending arrival of 5 more sets he needs the storage space so I made him an offer and he accepted as the deal to them is 100% profit.

Optimus: - can you pm me the contact details for the place you bought them from? At that price i'm tempted to get a set for the aforementioned A1 to help my newly driver qualified missus not crash in her first winter.

You do know the A1 is a different fitment compared to the Golf?
A1 5 x 100
Golf 5 x 112
I got ours Audi TT alloys and put Nankang Snow tyres on them. All for under £300.

I just found that out (PCD differences), I won't be buying those then.

16" wheels definitely don't fit an r.
-
My 16" steels don't fit the R, not even the back.
-
Ok ok I think we have confirmed they don't fit the 'R'

I have some winter tyres from a previous car. Just wondering if they would fit my PP golf? Tyres are 225/50 R17. Which alloys would be suitable? A nice set of 17's would be ideal.

Ideally you'd need 225 45 17 for the Golf.
Most VW group wheels will fit so long as they're around 7.5 or 8" wide, 5x112mm PCD and an offset between ET50 and ET40 (maybe a little lower than 40 too but not ideal if you get snow.
