If you have already updated to the latest maps will the system allow you to re install the same update again?
I think my gps issue is with the maps not the gps signal as I always have a min of 8 sats locked but occasionally my map doesn't move quick enough to put me onto my programmed route, hence the "off road" message

You get off road when the road you are on isn't on the maps data base. It isn't a fault it's just the road hasn't been added to the map database yet. Stop worrying about the maps and nav it all looks fine, mine does this on a new estate that our friends live on. It's only just been added to the map database.

I fully understand that but this was on the main A12 which was built over 20 yrs ago. Also if this was the case why does it suddenly move onto the road then after a few mins even tho I haven't changed course? It is like playing catch up
-
Is it always that road this happens on?
It could be:
1) The map data actually isn't 100% accurate - the road might be out by a few metres -I've seen this before.
2) GPS is probably only referred to periodically, inertial nav is used more than you think... maybe your inertial system is a bit out of whack.

With regards to option 2 I have checked my steering angle etc via vcds and all is perfect in addition other times it has showed me a lot further off the given track than shown in my pics. This was the only time I could stop to capture it

Hi all, had my Gti mk7 non pp in black pearl 3 weeks now, loving it.
But can anybody tell me,
does the now standard sat-nav accept UK postcodes? Or just the address?
Just taken it on a road trip to Cornwall, and could not find anywhere to enter the postcode on the sat-nav only the place and street names, house numbers etc.
-
Just found the same problem thread on here and I have Sussed it out!
Should have searched the thread before posting, Doh!
-
It always has accepted UK postcodes!
Just change from address to postcode, then press ABC button on bottom left,... All in the manual tbh ;)
-
So I reinstalled May 2015 maps as it will let you do it, but still the same problem & in fact this morning is was really bad
GPS shows 8 sats locked as a min, going to now run gps tracker app on iphone along side to see if I get a large coordinate difference when it goes "off road"
So can anyone direct me to a download of last years map updates? As I wish to revert back to the 2014 maps for a testing purpose. If someone has it on an sd card I am happy to pay postage both ways.
Booked in for a dealer visit but I doubt they will fix unless it's been seen before  VCDS autoscan shows no faults
Thanks
-
Is it always the same place you see this happen??
-
BTW, I do see funnies from time to time.. eg yesterday, driving down the M1, suddenly I look down to see it telling me about the UK speed limits - it only does that when you are not on a UK road, then join one.... which means for a little while it thought I was in a field or something.
I've had OEM sat nav in my cars for about 10 years now. I have to say that this one is the most disappointing unit I've had.
I'm a business user and its the one thing that makes my GTD a less than optimal company car...

Hi Fred,
No completely random, this morning I was way off course for 20 secs or more with the wrong voice instructions as well, then back on course. Its like a loss of gps lock but the screen still says 9/12 sats so I presume this means locked? VCDS shows the same data.
Hopefully it will do the same on the way home & I can cross reference the lat & long with my iphone gps app

Yes I totally agree both systems in my previous cars were dvd based (BMW & MERC) & I never had this issue as frequent as this. I need to revert back to the previous maps to see if this is purely a map bug issue, unfortunately I have been unable to source the older map data (2014) & my dealer can only order the new update on sd card  I really need someone who has the 2014 maps on an SD card in drawer somewhere that I can borrow
-
Why are you bothering with the dealer when you can download the nav pro maps yourself?? Also you'll find that systems using a dvd based system are exactly the same as the VW one in fact the vw one will be quicker. I've had no issues at all with my nav pro and its far from disappointing.

You mis-read my post I have already downloaded and install the latest maps, however I wish to revert back to the earlier 2014 map data to see if this helps. The older map data is not available online or via a dealer.
-
I can't see putting a previous map on helping to be honest. Have you tried re downloading the latest ones again and updating again. Maybe you've had a glitch when downloading? May be worth a try.

Depends if the new update is bugged? I will re-download and re-install but I am sure that if there had been a problem last time the car would of failed to update. I use the exfat format on the sd card as that seems to be the best
-
When you do the update, it contains a checksum for the map data.
If the download was corrupt, the car would tell you...
Its 100% not that.
I still think its either to do with interference or inaccurate map data. Either is possible.

Yep I agree had a little off road issue on the way home but both the pro nav gps and iPhone gps showed the same coordinates so it's not a gps issue. However the map showed me crossing a field for 10 secs before jumping back on track. All very strange and random
-
My sat nav told me yesterday to turn left onto "Stuttgarter Strasse". You might not think that is weird.... except I was in Cardiff city centre... will show this to my dealer next time and see if it makes them laugh.

Maybe your nav is programmed for theoretical British street names based on Germany winning WW2?

That is strange - the data mapping of position to the map isnt something that should go wrong like that.
I've seen it where the road has been moved (and the map doesnt know it) and I'm off road, but never where what you describe happens.
Which firmware verson of the NavPro do you have? This sort of bug sounds more system level that anything else to me...

Don't think they (i.e. my ancestors) would have liked Wales much... too much rain
-
Funnily enough my Nav was giving me duff information the other day when I was on the way to the football.
It was as if the road had been moved slightly so my Nav kept trying to reroute me back onto the road I was actually on.
I've never seen it do anything like that. Maybe something wrong with the satellites above
The only time I've previously had an issue was it froze on the first day I got it when I was driving from England to Scotland.
-
Optimus, think I might still have the Nov 2014 release for the Nav pro (which I am still running), if it's of any use ?
I'll have a look on the PC for it today.

Yes pls I can send you a memory card / stick to load it onto if you don't mind? Happy to cover postage just need to know the size required which I guess will be 32gb.
Thanks

So dealer visit went very well, I supplied various photo's of the nav off course to help identify the problem. However even after the new shark fin was fitted the tech called to say he was still not happy with the nav tracking although the signal from the aerial was good  So I have the car back for testing tomorrow but if the issue still exists then it will require a whole new pro nav unit including the ssd as the gps module is built into it. Fairly easy unit in and out and done under warranty.
-
Process of elimination should mean your system will now work when you have a brand new unit. Makes sense that the gps module could be buggered so hopefully a good result when it's eventually replaced.

Morning,
Totally failure same issue  However I managed to stop this time when off course and cold reboot the unit. When it came back on my location was perfect although I hadn't moved ! The rest of my journey was spot on when normally it goes off course again on the final few miles. Has to be the gps module in the unit now nothing left. Back on the phone to the dealer
-
I know it's a pain in the a4se but at least this way it should get fixed properly.

VW tech dept have asked for a new gps aerial cable to be run loosely around the inside of the car outside of the trim just to check its not a cable fault. Although current cable passes all diag tests as new MIB is £5,000  If this fails then a new unit will be fitted. No complaints from me the master tech involved is excellent but he has to follow the guidelines I guess due to the costs involved.
-
Just returned from VW with new MIB fitted quick test on the way home found it to be spot on  Real test will be tomorrow from cold so to speak  Anyways unit is running later hardware and firmware than the removed unit but is has 2014/2015 maps installed where as I think I upgraded to 2015/2016? Won't be doing this upgrade again in case the upgrade caused the issue (not certain but once done cannot be reversed so not risking it )
New Hardware is H44 & New Firmware is 0376
My old unit was running H43 & 0362
The service from local dealer has been excellent and being able to email the master tech direct made life a lot easier especially when sending over pics of the issue.
Will update after cold start test......wish me luck
-
All fixed nav is perfect now excellent service from Chelmsford VW
-
Did you upgrade to the new maps?
-
Did you upgrade to the new maps?
No just in case it was the maps although doubtful. As once you upgrade you can't go back
-
Personally if it was me I would be upgrading otherwise before you know it you will be out of warranty and have outdated maps.
I know its an inconvenience but surely with the safety of a warranty behind you, now is the ideal time!
Nobody else has mentioned the same problem after a map upgrade.

What's the rush ? Car is 09/2014 so I have 3 yrs, I will wait for the update in either Nov 2015 or May 2016 & still have 16 months to fix it if needed, could even wait until May 2017. Yearly updates are usually a waste of time I normally only update every 2 years anyway. I only did this update to see if it would work problem was I did it before I really used the previous maps so couldn't judge if the issue was there before
-
You get 5 years map updates not 3.

I've seen this comment before..
Have you a VW link confirming this change ?
Thanks.

No rush, its your car, your choice.
Just wondering since you said above you wouldn't be doing it again. I just thought that was crazy considering the car is under warranty so best doing it while covered.

I was referring to that particular update only (may 2015)
-
I've got the may 15 maps on mine and haven't had any issues. The 5 years was stated in VW driver magazine and also on vw website. They have never changed the link that's posted but it's definitely 5 years.

Hello Guys
Just picked up my new GTI today with the Discover Nav in it, please see the screenshot below of the latest Firmware/Hardware it came with -

"online download".... now that is interesting!
That's a MIB2 feature for sure.

I wonder how long that would take considering it can take a fair amount of time on a PC?

Well a 4g connection is faster than most domestic broadband... and even so, if you were on your drive then you could connect your phone to your home wifi... mind you, the slowest component will be the bluetooth connection between your phone and the car.
Just makes it easier than downloading, copying to a card then updating the system from the card.... or for people who increasingly don't have a computer, but instead an ipad or just phone.
Would have made more sense for the car to have a wifi client and or its own 4g modem.... the former probably does exist in the unit (but not active) and the latter was how the original carnet stuff worked with MIB1 (but not in the UK!)

Not really sure it does make it easier. In theory 4G is faster but that's in the bigger cities with a decent reception. I'm sure my last update was in the region of 19Gb, I certainly don't fancy downloading that via a phone or having to hang about in my drive with the ignition on etc.
The idea is a good one and I can see why it might appeal to those with just an ipad or phone but for me it would be less hassle putting the SD card in and doing it that way as its not any different than how I put my music on the car but whatever makes it easier for people.
