Title: Micheln Pilot Sport 3
Post by: Juicetin on 22 August 2015, 15:17
Costco currently have these at £98 a corner fitted, are they any good?
Would like some user feedback if anybody has had them on a Gti\Gtd or similar.
Thanks

You should only consider 3 tyres (not in order of preference):
1. Michelin PSS - expensive but worth it according to the majority of users. Best steering feel.
2. Continental Contisport 5 - noisy, excellent all round performance
3. Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 = very balanced performance, trumped by the PSS and possibly the CS5, but quieter than either and one of the quietest. Compound has been updated recently so it might produce even better results.

All the above are excellent and way better than the Michelin PS3 which is a bit of a dud unfortunately.

One thing you can be sure of: Bridgestones are the worst Premium tyres

Yes its a good tyre, you won't have any problems with them.  Some better options out there now, but unless you drive at 9/10ths you wouldn't notice easily and you will find a lot of worse tyres so don't be put off too much.

You can get most of the top brand tyres for the same money as Costco I would have thought, so its not like its a really special deal..

I ran PS3s on my MK5 and they were the best tyre I've used in wet weather. I subsequently changed them for Eagle F1s and overall they are a far better tyre. I've not got them on my MK7 GTD and they're excellent - think I paid about £85 a corner fitter too.

I have the PSS on my M135i as standard. They are fantastic- really confidence inspiring.

The PSS'S were awesome on the M135i. Do they do the right size for the GTI/R?
Evo's latest test has the Conti 5's winning easily with Yokohama placing a strong second, Pirelli n Goodyear 3rd n 4th.
Bridgestones were 9th...I have them on the S1 as well.

There is a tyre thread on the forum in which I posted lots of reviews.

Yes they are indeed like super-glue in all conditions.Even wet roundabouts!.I know once they are down to about 4mm they take on a whole different personality .
I'm not sure about the GTI sizes. At least if they do you won't have to source different sizes for the front and rears as with the M Lite.
May i ask why you sold it?.I love mine to bits but it's fuel economy is ruining me.It also seems to constantly provoke me into doing some silly speeds. It's so easy to get yourself into big trouble such is it's nature.

They are a great tyre - the Michelin PSS are better, but wet or dry the PS3 will impress at that price-point fitted. The difference between PS3 and Bridgestones on a tramp-happy MK5 was night and day. They're grippy and reasonably hard wearing - a rare combination.

Personally I'd much rather take other drivers opinions of their experiences than a magazines top 10.

To the OP mytyres are doing them for £85.50 so Costco are not a "must buy now offer" although I believe Costco do a decent fitting service.

On that note, I was impressed with the look of the fitting service, it Iooked very professional and the guys there seemed to really be taking care with a chap's Jag wheels.
Thanks for replies all.

They are very professional at the Gateshead branch -someone comes round and appraises the pre-fit condition of the wheels so they and you know if they damaged/scratched your wheels in the fitment of new tyres.

If you are only getting 2 tyres, they will always put the new ones on the back - they will not deviate from this rule. I had an uneven wear issue with P7s on the front wheels on my Scirocco, so for obvious reasons I did not want the new ones on the back and my P7s from the back rotated to the front. They were unmoved by my excuse, they think that new tyres are so slippery that they are a complete death trap and having a new car with new tyres all round puts you in great peril. I rotated them myself when I got home.

I'd agree with them that the new tyres need scrubbing in to be 100% effective, but I can take a chance on 90% effective to save the car chewing my other 2 P7s from the back to bits. The PS3s wore evenly on the fronts.

That's good to know. I wonder if they have had problems in the past with folk trying to pull a fast one?
Hopefully they do that at all branches as I need 2 fronts as well.

I had 2 sets of Eagle F1 of my remapped Mk7 GTI and the difference is massive, could actually use most of the power. Excellent tyre and I will be putting these on my R when I need to change them

If you need 2 fronts, they will put your current back wheels on your front and replace the tyres you need replacing, to put the new ones on the back. If you want the new ones on the front you'll have to rotate yourself when you get home. They will not let you leave with your new tyres on the front, unless all 4 are new.

I'm sure all branches will be the same, using the same kit and following the same methods and standards of fitment. I'd put a PS3 on a par with an Eagle Asy 2.

Same experience with Costco at Westhill (Aberdeen). Have always found them to be good.

The conti 5s are no noisier than any other tyre so ignore what the test results say and other people.

The main point Chris is that no tyre i've ever had fitted to a VW is as noisy as a Flintstone!

That goes for Pirelli P7, Dunlop SP01, Michelin PS3, Conti 2, Conti 3, Uniroyal Rainsport.

Some stats I see for tyres seem complete bollocks. I noticed a 5% improvement in fuel economy on my MK5 170TDI when I swapped out the Bridgestones for PS3s, yet they have the same rating for economy. Flintstone S001 have a B rating for wet grip, i'd give them a D at best.

Yeah I remember when the Glasgow one first opened its tyre section several years ago and them insisting the tyres go on the front or they wouldn't do them. It was quite comical as every customer that came in after me were all arguing the point as well.

The noise levels that are being complained about though are 2dbs across about 3-4 tyres. With the best will in the world you won't be able to tell the difference in the car. The sound meter on my phone had the conti 2s and 5s at the same level and according to the test results they are different.

Exactly 2dBA in any situation is undetectable. They main reason people feel the new tyres are quieter is the extra tread depth.

Anyone that disagrees about sound please feel free to google the letter I put after my name HAA RHAD MSHAA - 2dB is irrelevant :)

I take it that its ok two have different tyre brands front to back?
I need two new ones in the front. Current ones are conti sport contact 2's all round.
But may change the fronts to another tyre brand.

Thanks.

Is this an offer they have on at the moment, or the individual price for a tyre (225/40 R18) ?

BTW, they wont fit to the front as there were lawsuits in the states where people had lost the back end after new tyres were fitted to the front, they sued Costco - well it is states.  I did ask them if they knew if it was because the US cars were RWD, maybe with Traction control ? he wasn't sure..  But, they will sure stick to the rule that's for sure.

Always use Costco for fitting, first time I broke my own rule in the last 10 years, the other fitting company fitted the wrong non-XL tyres and caused no end of trouble :(
