Title: Help - MK3 1997 Steering
Post by: Tahi on 01 August 2015, 14:16
Hi everyone, I have a problem with the steering in my MK3 1997 GTI.

It only happens after driving long distances, occasionally when I slow down and turn the corner, the steering locks up. I've checked the power steering fluid and it's not low. I'm not too mechanically minded so if anyone could give me any input that would be great.

Also, I read that VW power steering fluid is real particular, and because I don't know what was used by the previous owner, could it be possible that it's caused by using the wrong fluid? And if so is it possible that it happens turning one side?

Check the belt tension, it could be slipping.

Check the tension as mmm said, if you can splash 8 quid on a new belt it's a no brainer.
most cars are on their original pulleys which wear out as they are friction drives, new belts can still slip prematurely as the belt drives from the v flanks and if it bottoms out then it will slip pretty quick especially when wet or cold.
VW want a fortune for the pulleys so I just bought new pas belts once a year lol

It'll be the belt slipping. Get a new belt (or tighten the current one if it's in good nick) and all will be fine.
