Title: Retro Fitting LED Back Lights?

Is there a guide anywhere on site explaining how to retro fit GTI/GTD led back lights - I've tried searching but couldn't find one?  Or even better, is there anyone in the north east of England who could do it for me!  Thanks.

I was thinking the same, surely it's like replacing the spotlights in your house with LEDs. I didn't need VCDS to get those to work in my house lol

Not sure how familiar you are with the Leuchte channels in the BCM, but each exterior light on a mk7 is controlled by these channels (there are 19 x channels for each lamp). The Leuchte channel set for the reversing lights are
Leuchte28RFL LC11- Right Reversing lamp
Leuchte29RFL RA64 - Left Reversing Lamp

Each of the Leuchte channels-sets starts off with a "Lasttyp" setting which tells the car the kind of light that is installed (Lasttyp means "Load Type" in English). For plain ordinary incandescent lamps the setting for the first of these 19 x channel is something like 9 - allgemeine Glühlampe 27W; auch H15 . But for LED lamps, there are other settings that are used. I have shown the 46 x possible settings for the Lasttyp channels in the table below:

Also, for incandescent lamps, it is possible to illuminate the light up-to a setting of "!00" (in the Dimmwert channel), but for LED lamps, this number increases up to "127". What does all this mean to someone thinking of upgrading? Well the short answer is - not much at all. Depending on the LED lamps, you will most likely be able to simply plug-and-play the fitting (without any error messages from the CAN bus). But, to get the most out of a properly functioning LED lamp, I suspect that there will be some change that should be made to the two Leuchte channel sets that I have indicated above.

Done some googling and it needs extra wires for the lights to work properly, but no vcds coding is required.
