This has been a problem on my wife's car for nearly 2 years now.
We've had it plugged in numerous times with no fault detected.
It's terrible on fuel also.
It can cut out at any moment, after starting, under heavy breaking, turning whilst breaking or just cutting out dead!!
Any ideas?

What's the engine code?
Does she have all her keys and some more on the keychain with the ignition key?

Engine code is AE
And there is only another key (one for Central locking one for ignition) then another small key

AE is not the engine code me thinks... they are 3 letters on the mk4.
My money would be on ignition switch (the electrical part at the back of ignition lock).
Why do you have two different keys for the same car?

AEH
Two keys as said above as central locking went and for a quick cheap fix put a skoda lock in the door

When it cuts out do any of the lights on dash come up?
What did you use to check for fault codes?
