Right, I've started my placement for university and I want to make the GTI noisier.
I want to get an exhaust system and I'm not sure about what to get and also where to get one from?
Slip on or full length? I'm not interested in performance gains I just want the noise.
Akrapovic seem good but a little pricey, 1600 for slip on and 3500 for evolution line ( full length)
What else is good?
Help

I'll not bother asking whether you want a resonated or non res system, that seems evident  so if you wanna be full bore all the time or just at full choke? I'd say milltek or Bcs Powervalve depending on your choice.
-
Save yourself a grand and buy a drill...
Failing that get a Milltek non resonated and buy your neighbours some earplugs for when you get home from MaccyD's at 2am.
I saw a MK4 Golf on Sunday with a massive double exhaust that stuck out miles and was as loud as anything. It was also sitting on its bumpstops and had cotton reels for wheels. I wish I took a pic of it!
That was just before I was overtaken by two mk5's within about ten minutes of each other. One a black GTI overtook me on a blind bend in a 30 limit then did an illegal right turn into a 'buses only' slip road.
The next was a red TDI GTI wannabe that overtook myself then another car in a 30 limit before cutting in to turn left - at a red traffic light so he had to stop anyway? What the flying f##k?
I hope I wasn't quite that stupid when I was young. Mind you with my luck, if I'd taken my tw@t pills and did something like that, knowing my luck, the only police traffic car within 30 miles would be parked up right in view!
Are sporty Golfs turning into chav mobiles?
Am I getting too old for all this?
Anyway, Milltek Non Res. good quality, British, good reputation....
-
Am I allowed to offer the grown up advice that any exhaust you fit that is louder than the OEM part used for the Type Approval is illegal.
They don't even have to measure the noise level to charge you...

Resonated or non resonated is all gobbledegook for me. I think I'd want some form of control over it? Is that possible?

I don't understand?
Plenty of cars make far more noise than a golf GTI so how could making it slightly louder be illegal?

Are you saying you want to be able to electronically increase the sound of your exhaust, that way you can make it louder or quieter whenever you want?

The res and non res basically means quieter or louder. The Powervalve is a boost controlled system that opens up the majority of the exhaust, so imagine if you were driving slow it sounds like a standard exhaust, then if you open her up it sounds very loud. There are other systems out there like IPE that use an electronic control to open up the exhaust instead a mechanical type system, these are usually more expensive though and you have to push buttons instead of just pushing your foot down.
And yes, technically speaking changing the exhaust is illegal, but so are HID lights and doing more than 70 on the M1, doesn't mean anyone is going to pull you for it, providing its not to the extremes

I agree the BCS power valve is the way to go if you want control and it sound decent. If you just want noise, take the rear silencer off and stick a straight pipe there
-
Or buy an R.....

Its to do with the Type Approval.
For your car to be on the road, one Golf GTI was examined and deemed to be ok by the ministry of transport - they don't examine them all, they look at one and then all the others are the same.
Have a read of the cops advice here:
http://www.norfolk.police.uk/safetyadvice/roadsafety/advicetoroadusers/howlegalisyourvehicle.aspx
I'm not quite sure what violating Type Approval would mean, they don't say, but in theory it opens you up to not having insurance I suspect...

But, what if you had a problem with your exhaust and it needed replacing. Just say, the garage you use offers Miltek exhaust systems and you decided to replace your standard exhaust with a newer, better system?
Anyway, the chances of actually getting pulled for something like this are extremely slim.
Unless your driving an X Reg punto, with a cannon coming out the back. I doubt you will attract enough attention

Are there really people here who think that fitting a loud exhaust to their car is not illegal?

It is illegal, but as someone else said....so is driving at 78mph.
Fact is, if you get caught/fined/whatever, you are pretty unlucky!

I would imagine that this is what you want

It made me smile when I logged in and saw the two threads side by side! Fair play to Nigel and these are really top quality systems from what I've seen.
and no, I don't have any connection to BCS or any other company!

I think you believe that I want an exhaust loud enough to set off car alarms or something ridiculous like that. I literally want some more noise, I'm only really thinking as loud as an R or a focus ST not something ridiculous

You have a 'grown-up' hot hatch. Perhaps the Focus ST would have been more suitable.

Just because a car makes a louder noise than a gti does not make it at all infantile. Besides I'd just like to clarify the GTI is the car I wanted. The Car I got, it's interior quality was a big issue for me because I am going to spend a lot of time in there.
I'm not saying I want an St in anyway I just want to increase the noise level slightly. The R is perfectly grown up too, but it makes more noise than the GTI
-
Seriously remove the rear silencer, it will increase the noise. If you want the car to be louder and sound better, get a downpipe and sports cat
-
Get a Remus exhaust. You get quad pipes like the R and a deeper noise than the stock GTI exhaust. Plus a nice looking rear diffuser.
-
Turn up the bass and tune into the am frequency between stations, hey presto a deep growl that is throttle controlled.

The reason people have called it infentile is because you asked for a louder exhaust, not a better sounding, better performing exhaust. Many people have asked the same question but didn't get this response. I agree the GTI is too quiet, I was looking at replacing it aswell....and I did with an a R.
