Hello all. I've been recently having an issue with my first gear only where it will just not go into gear therefore have to pull off in 2nd gear. All other gears work fine so not an issue with the clutch. Does anyone know what could be causing the issue, gear linkage, slave cylinder?!?

16v?

If its a 16v you can check the transmission by selecting at the so-called 'tower' mechanism on the gearbox. Look for the balance weight on it, which looks like the head of a golf club. It has the two cables from the gearlever inside the cabin attached. The lateral cable adjustment might have slipped. When this happens, then basically the gear lever and gearbox selector are out of phase, and selection problems occur.
Get a gear linkage repair kit, quite cheap and change gearbox oil. In meantime select 2nd gear before going into 1st from start off. Other then that could be a few things like worn bushes etc. Most likely your gear linkages need aligning with the tool or clutch might need adjusting/tightening. Do the inexpensive things first or get diagnosis from a good garage.

It's an 8v. Needs a couple of pushes before it goes into gear. Sometimes need to go to 2nd gear then the first. Will check the linkages and post back

I had same issue.I checked the linkages etc, even aligned the shaft from this link :- http://www.aircoolednut.com/erkson/personal/mycars/adjust_shifter.htm
nothing made any difference until i replaced the sprung ball thing which is on the top of the gearbox,in front of the rubber bellows that the gearbox selector linkage arm goes through,i think it's item number 40 in this pic :-

I undid mine and it was all broken up inside. It houses a sprung ball bearing held in place by a plastic cage and tiny tiny ball bearings.I had to use a probe with a magnet on to get it all out.Replaced it with a good one and gears are now much much better.
It has been removed from the gearbox in this pic (top area of pic) :- https://sites.google.com/site/rubjonny//images/golf/gti28.jpg

Right so after some further investigations the pictures below are where I found a lot of play in the bearings and mounts

Hopefully a linkage repair kit should sort it. Will post back when changed
-
So I managed to change the gear linkage and it was working perfect until I drove it for about 20 minutes and it just wouldn't go into first gear. Will try the alignment next and see what happens. Any others ideas will be helpful!

You got any respectable mechanics/garage near you. Probably best just get it diagnosed and fixed properly
-
have you checked your gear oil recently? and how does your clutch feel?

Suspect you have not tightened the clamp bolt enough on the rod, fine for a while but worked loose... It really needs to be tight as a tiger!

I put some gear box fluid in now which seems to have helped. Will put some more in tomorrow as I only got a litre in there and it takes 2 litres.
