hey again ppl,im new to the golfs,iv just got a 88 gti 16valver 105K 2 previous owners, swapped it for my mk5 escort, lol friend lost his job and needed something cheap to run!! Im goin to give it a full service but would like you all to recommend a good oil for it,IS 10/40 semi synthetic any good for it???
-
I use 15/40 on my GTI. Was told by VW not to use Syn or Semi Syn because i would prob lose oil through the rings etc due to its age. Most people reccomend Synthia Gold from VW. Personally i wouldnt advise it unless you know the engine has been looked after!

I run VW Synta silver in mine with a genuine VW oil filter as it has a NRV (Non return valve). Most on here will recommend Synta silver. I think silver is 15/40 but I might be wrong as I cant remember, I just always use it. You can get the genuine VW oil and filters from VW (obviously) or GSF who will be slightly cheaper.

I use syntha silver or castrol 10/40. runs and sounds perfect so I can't complain.
-
i use that castrol oil for engines over 75000 miles, seems to do the job, its 15/40 i think, but mine's an 8v. most oil is pritty much the same, as long as it conforms to vw standards you should be fine, all the blurb about the oils quality is on the bottle!
