Title: VW Extended Warranty
Post by: Sootchucker on 20 July 2015, 17:16
Wife and I are starting to consider extended warranties (or at least seeing how much they cost).

I've been onto VW's website and it just basically says there are different levels of service - Comprehensive, Named Component and Driveline, and the comprehensive one seems to be the one of choice (much like the normal 3 year warranty), but there are no guide prices, and I think we are a bit premature to get an actual quote at the moment from them.

Does anyone know what a ball park figure would be for the Comprehensive version for a MK7 GTD and a Polo Blue GT per annum (just a ball park figure).

I have a mate that's an AA Patrol and he can get me the AA's Parts and Labour warranty pretty cheaply (under the friends and family rule), but it limits each claim to a maximum of only £500. I'm thinking that if the worst happened and the mechatronics unit of the DSG gear box gave up, that would be several thousand pounds to fix ?

It's just part of an evaluation we are going though at present as to whether we keep the existing cars (with an add on Warranty), or change for new ones early next year. Also a few people have said that near the end of my PCP, VW should automatically contact me and ask me about purchasing an extended warranty. Is that correct and is it an automated process or do I have to register an interest before hand ?

Sootchucker, it may or may not be of use to you, but I just got quotes for extending the warranty on my Mk6 last week.  Not for myself but for a potential buyer.  Obviously different car but might give you a rough idea.  Quotes are for a VW car not exceeding 60k miles.

My current warranty runs out 1st Sept (3 years) and I haven't yet had the warranty renewal letter, which should get sent automatically, so instead I just phoned them up.  They asked for the reg and mileage and emailed me the quotes straight away.

These are the figures for the 3 warranty options with the various excesses and with or without roadside assistance.

I take it the "comprehensive" is the same as the three year manufacturers/dealer warranty from new ?

Booth11: I take it that quoted price is for extending another year? It seems too cheap for 2 years cover (to take you to 5 years) as the current going rate for buying the fully inclusive pre-registration extension is £550 for 2 extra years....unless it has lots of exclusions.

Yes MH, those prices are for one year's cover.  Exclusions are as per the link in my previous post

The £550 is to extend the full original 3 years warranty to the full 5 covered as per the original 3. It is unlikely that any extended cover would ever cover everything the original warranty did. However the £550 does not include extended roadside assist so thats a fair additional cost.

Even on the full original 3 year warranty you only get 1 years roadside cover in the UK, unlike 2 years with Seat and 3 years with Audi or Skoda. Do we still get the VW "mobility guarantee" whereby if you service your VW with a VW dealer to the schedule, they will provide breakdown cover that is as a result of a failure that wwould constitute warranty work (so not punctures/running out of fuel/misfuelling/accident).

The reason I ask is I have a 5 year factory warranty and paid £500 for the extra two years

5 year factory warranty should not come with any exclusions if you don't exceed 90k miles in the term, it should have the exact same terms as the 3 year warranty that comes "free" with the car.

If you going to keep the car more than 3 years bite the bullet and pay up front . Cheaper and better cover

Or if you plan on keeping it less than 3 years but want to sell privately (fully transferable) - selling an almost 3 year old car with 2 years warranty left will instill a lot of confidence in the car to your purchaser.

I have never seen any documented proof that I have a 5 year warranty, except it listed on my invoice as an option that I paid for.

MH, if you haven't already, go to the VW UK website, then click on the "Owners" menu at the top.

Go, "My Volkswagen" from the drop down, then "My Volkswagen account"

Create a user name and password and input your reg no and answer a couple of questions , and it will create a personal portal for you car and show you when it was first registered, finance (when it starts and ends), extended warranty (when it starts and ends), as well as service history with when and where it was serviced.

I only found this recently but seems quite useful. It is a little slow to load though (well, what else would you expect from VW UK ?)

Exactly, that was my view. I figured it will help me sell privately at a better price, time will tell

I'm already on it. I just logged in. Apparently my car has arrived in the UK but not yet at the dealer.

Must be a throwback from my helpful salesman arranging for it to be collected from port to speed up the delivery process. Officially it isn't here yet, and as an ordered car I don't own, there's nowhere for my reg number.

Just logged on the VW site and it tells me my car has arrived. Just checked my garage and they are right, the car is there. No mugs these VW guys

Thats a different system as obviously the tracking system doesn't have the reg no.
Log on as above then click Add Car.

I added the R - it recognised the reg number, but as I had to tell the system that I had an extended warranty and service pack, I have little faith in being told I have an extended warranty as confirmation that VW knows I have. I was hoping to add details and be told that my car had an extended warranty tagged to it for reassurance/confirmation.

I think its just asking you for confirmation really.
I had to enter that I had the service option but then when I clicked on the service button it was able to give me the correct dates.
