Title: What does the red "i" mean?
Post by: p0bber on 21 September 2005, 17:57
Hi,

I'm looking round for a Mk4 1.8T at the moment and have been to see a few.  I'm pretty sure I've found the one I want but just wondered if anyone could solve the mystery of the red "i" for me.  What does it mean?  Two that I've seen have it and the one I like doesn't but all the cars seem the same.  Is it something to do with the spec/trim or something under the bonnet?

Thanks

Simon

Think it means its a turbo one as opposed to a 2.0l 8v

Don't think so, all the ones I've seem have been 20V turbos, (unless someone's trying to scam me)

I agree with John.  The red 'I' shows it to be a turbo model.  The badges were only used from a certain date (I think 99) but to be honest I wouldn't worry too much as badges appear to be whatever the factory had that day! My 2000 1.8T has a red 'I' but a mate of mine has the exact same model and his doesn't!

whatever the factory had that day!

Like everyone says - if you ring VW they will tell you that the red i is on the turbo model.
I know a few people with 1.8t's and they got silver i's, it is just down to what badges were in the factory at the time

I used to put the badges ( with a tempate to get the correct position ) on at the Dealership when I when doing the PDI as some customers didn't want them on and some did .
Come to think of it I've still got a bag of brand new unused mk4 GTI badges ( both RED and SILVER I's ) , is anyone interestead

The red 'I' means nothing. Cars come out of the factory badgeless and it just pot luck which ines get put on the cars. I have no red on my 1.8T and i have friends with cars under 2000 with the red on theirs

Thanks for all your replies.  That's put my mind at rest. I've just rang up and arranged to go collect it tomorrow.

No doubt I'll be back on once I've discovered all the little things wrong with it :)  Should be ok though, it's only done 35k.

Cheers

Simon
