Getting giddy at the thought of pick up day and was wondering how vw did it. Bmw had a big sign up saying "welcome to your new car and a bottle of champagne". Do vw let the car do the talking or are there are little freebies? Mine is at Smith knight Fay on Oldham .

Very much depends on the dealer I think. Some do the whole unveiling 'I'm ready to go home now' thing and others don't.
I want no ceremony, which is just as well as my dealer doesn't go in for all that. Just want a defect free, swirl free, bullsh!t and pain free handover.

My Beemer delivery was totally pants. The salesman couldn't get away quick enough.Pretty shocking really.
My local VW dealer does the sheet over the car thing inside the showroom.I think that's a nice touch.
I'd only be wanting the car to be dry so I can inspect it properly. Some people take the handover when it's raining but that's a recipe for disaster.

Getting a swathe of freebie on pick-up is usually an indication that you didn't get as much discount as you could've done!
Locally, the Benfield group used to give out a bunch of flowers and a bottle of top-up oil, but less good discounts than Pulman who have given me nowt with the car. I'd rather have the discount than a few freebies.

Just chuck me the keys let me look it over for damage I would be out of there.

There is a few good threads on here showing cars on pick-up day - plenty to drool over while you wait
