Model specific boards => Golf mk7 => Topic started by: Booth11 on 03 July 2015, 07:13

I know this point has come up before, but just a quick question to Mk7 R owners (and anyone else for that matter) -
As there are a few more people on here with R's, do you think there is any value in having a separate sub section within the Mk7 section to post R related tech stuff? Or do people prefer to keep it as it is, in the main body of the section.
I have no particular feelings either way and like it as it is, but it might make it easier to find some R specific information, particularly as there seems to be more of this coming through now.
Thoughts?
(and, before someone points it out, I know I don't actually have an R myself yet)
-
I haven't got an r but I like things the way they even with a separate gtd section
-
There might be some stuff specific to the R but there is an awful lot of stuff that applies to not only the R but the GTI (and GTD) too.
It might then mean that R (and GTI) owners miss stuff that might be helpful to them (although I realise that anyone can access the whole Mk7 section).
Reminds me of when I had an Astra VXR and was on a all model Astra forum - the amount of useful stuff I missed as I ended up in the VXR section all the time was huge.
Non starter for me I'm afraid (admittedly as a non R owner).
-
I would keep the Status Quo. It will only create divisions between them and us which we don't need. I for one enjoy reading what the R owners have to say.

Yeah, that's a good point and very true, there is a lot of stuff that's generic to all Mk7 models. I suppose even it it was just for R specific technical topics, the threads would undoubtedly veer off into areas relating to any model. I suspect that even if there was a sub section, most stuff would get posted in the main board anyway.
I only asked as I think Jimble raised it at some point and I don't think there was ever a definitive answer, which in itself is probably the answer to the question
I like the 'sense of community' of things being all together.
-
I don't think there are enough members to split us up, plus if some of us get stage 3 we will literally be so confused as to where to go it will be unreal
Plus as Gnasher says, most subjects are interchangeable, admittedly if the R was massively different in suspension and engine block then fair enough, but what they post about springs I might wanna know, ya know
-
Fair points everyone
Certainly not about 'splitting up', or creating 'them and us', that would be the last thing you want. We want harmony (with the occasional bit of discord )
Plus keeping it as it is makes it easier for anyone interested in crossing over to an R to access information.

Me too, and I haven't even got a 7 of any description.

Yes Simon, it's time you got rid of that three pedalled Mk6 dinosaur....
-
Tbh i'm not a huge fan of having a TDI section, it's something that has been done since the mk4, i think due to the amount of R owners on here now the danger would be that the main section would be completely dead! :D

Thanks for your response Jimble, the only one from someone who has had an R.
I think you're right. It was just a question, probably a stupid one at that, to gauge people's thoughts, and was more aimed at the technical questions that arise from R ownership as opposed to more general stuff. Some very valid points have been made.
We will be one homogenous group
All the other R owners must be over on the R Forum......

I know, but having lost all aspirations towards owning nice cars, I really can't be arsed to even think about it. I still have an interest in cars and like to read about other what other people are up to, but that's as far as it goes.
There could well be a caravan deal for me next week, so that's more like it. Perhaps we could have a caravan sub-section instead.

Fair enough, and then there's burgeoning cycling interest  You a regular on bike forums?

No, but I do know where you can get some quality caravan detailing products

Just paint a red/silver stripe across the front and through the headlights and job done! It qualifies for this forum!
-
You a regular on bike forums?
No. I would imagine they are very much like cycling clubs.

Does Neil stock hobbrite and oven cleaner?

Funny you should say that, as the intended new one has red stripes.

Yes, interaction with actual real live people, perish the thought!
Does Neil stock hobbrite and oven cleaner?
Probably. Why don't you ask him
Funny you should say that, as the intended new one has red stripes.
Haha, well that's that then - GTI caravan sub section required. You should PM Jimble
Joking aside, every other car seems to have a red stripe somewhere or other at the moment. It's flavour of the month. I've seen 3 in the last 2 days. They are imposters - NOT the real thing

Why not go to the vwroc Forum for all things R?

Why not go to the vwroc Forum for all things R?
Surely there's room for R specific info on both forums? I wasn't suggesting setting up a rival R forum. Simply that there are a few more people on here with R's now or getting R's, so why not ask?
The R Forum is clearly a useful resource for any R owner, but I don't see why specific tech questions shouldn't also be raised here too. As the info often crops up in random threads and sometimes gets lost, I find my self constantly bookmarking numerous threads containing technical R info and just wondered if there was a better way and wondered what others thought. That's all.
Thanks for your valuable input.

I am trying really hard to get you to join vwroc. It does rock! Both this and vwroc are great most of the time.
Andy is already a member but does not post. Matt is a member and posts. It will be a veritable honour to have my matron of honour on both forums!

The R forum has lots of sensible people with valuable input. However I'm not keen on the place as it has too many f**kwits who only got a VW because it was on a cheap lease deal and have no idea what it's all about (other than it has 300bhp and an automatic gearbox that makes it get to 60mph very quickly if you have time to p**s about with the switches at the traffic lights and have something very quick in the next lane to you that you feel obliged to show off to). Then there are the ones who have to have the latest and greatest of everything so are very transient. And then there are those who believe the R is a bespoke model and all other Golfs are beneath them just because they have a fancy job title.
And of course the wind up merchants: This guy called VW7R is really annoying...
However Mr R400 is a genius and reminds me of our old friend Egbert Nosh. I do miss Nosher, I hope he's not dead (but wonder if he's morphed into R400).
I like the diversity on here. It's a GTI forum and has plenty of R owners which means there's not a lot of preaching going on as most of us are aware of the strengths and weaknesses of all the various Golf models and are up for a bit of banter.
I think the only danger on here is if there is too much R content which will annoy GTI and GTD owners and they won't bother posting which would be an awful shame as there is much good banter and good humour on here.
At the end of the day a Golf is a Golf. VW's favourite baby and comes in many flavours, none better than another for any particular reason, but each is targeted in a slightly different area.
So long as we remember it's a compromise and built to a price, and we buy within what our own personal budget and usefulness criteria are we can come on here and learn an awful lot.
I think the only use an R section would have would be if there was too much R traffic and other owners were becoming marginalised and annoyed.
-
I view us R owners as mere GTI Renegades
This is a far nicer placer to be and we need our Renegade meet at some point when Lady Booth of Kent finally gets hers
Leave us with the mix of it
There is more useful information on here to be honest and generally more accurate, not warmed to the other place really perosnally and in reality not very much interesting going on and very stagnant

Asker, the R Forum is certainly a much better place than it was, that I do not doubt, but I still have my reservations about it for the reasons Mr Ex has stated, which I won't repeat. This remains my preferred forum, again for the reasons stated by M. Ex and wigit.
But in addition to that, on a more personal level, it's also a question of time constraints. I have a full time job, a young child to raise and taxi, here, there and everywhere, my partner's every whim to cater for , ailing pets to care for, etc, etc. And that's without any car related stuff which I obviously love. So it's pushing it to spend time on this forum (though it may not seem like that at times ) let alone on different forums, possibly cutting and pasting the exact same questions, all of which would be onerous. I will always find time for things that are important to me but there are limits. And if I have to choose one forum, this is it. Besides I'm not sure I could take a double dose of you, my darling
All crap excuses probably, but true. But if will make you happy, I'll go onto VWRoc later today and register. I can't do it now as I'm just about to bunk off work early to take my new mountain bike for a spin.
Btw, please drop the Matron tag, I hate it
PS: I confess I love R400 too!

So I think we've established we DON'T want a seperate R sub section.
Wigit, we really must have an R owners meet, though not sure how I'll clear that with HWMBO - "I'm just off to meet up with a bunch of strange men in a car park to talk cars, honest".
-
he can come along as a voyeur if thats his thing

The Emperor of Essays has written another one and he is to be listened to and obeyed. The Matron has lost her position as requested. The forum wedding is off.

The worst offender i've seen was a Nissan Juke Nismo, awful looking car with or without the stripes and not as quick as the poor owner thought when he tried to undertake me in the GTD near Christmas.
-
I have had a GTI and Now a R and I am quite happy to leave it as it is as at the end of the day we all have a common denominator. A Golf
They may have their differences but I like the friendly nature of this site and no one tries to Lord it over anyone else. The same can't be said on VROC which I do lurk on but have no plans to join anytime soon.
Keep it as it and long may it continue to be a useful resource and amusing place to waste a few hours of your life that you are never going to get back
-

Being a Voyeur is NOT his thing, well that's what he tells me anyway

I can't wait for the Emperor's next musings! I'll be disappointed with anything less than a complete thesis
Mr Ex sums up some aspects of the R Forum very well and I have to say I agree with much of that summary. With some obvious exceptions (present company I mean) I just find many of the people on vwroc a little two-dimensional, a bit cardboard cutout and shallow. IMO members on this forum are much more three dimensional (well, as 3D as you can be in an online community ), more characterful and rounded. I think that is very evident in the natural chat and easy banter between us here and is a real strength of this place. And it goes without saying that there is a huge wealth of knowledge bourne out of the collective ownership of the various incarnations of Golf.

The Matron  resigned!
The forum wedding is off.
Dammit, I just bought a new hat and a whole load of confetti detailing gear. Hope I can get a refund

Sorry no hobbrite but some quality MF cloths to apply it with LOL!!!

Nissan Joke, with or without red stripe is    looks like they took EVERY styling cue from EVERY car and threw it all at the Nissan. My colleague who sits next to me has one, I have to pretend I like it, whilst never actually saying so
I honestly can't remember the abomination I saw yesterday, possibly a Citreon something or other, but the driver obviously thought it was THE cat's pyjamas. I gave it a hearty look of derision as I sped past
-
Defo keep as is. I like reading about the R stuff (even if it does make me feel a little less well endowed)

Sounds like it might've been one of those Citroen Cactus' :-

To me it looks like something the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles should be driving.

Definitely the TMNT-Mobile
But no, it wasn't that. It was smaller not SUV, white with red stripe along the side of the lower door sill area. Keep looking
-
Those Cactus things are so bad they're good!
A guy in my work has one in yellow. I'll refrain from commenting further.
Nissan Jukes seem amazingly popular for what is essentially a very ugly Renault Clio.
My step-mum has had two now. Handy for older people as they're quite high up I think is the secret to their success.

Yellow! Mmm lovely! I hope his dress sense is better than his car sense

Let's just say he and the car are well matched.

Nissan Jukes seem amazingly popular for what is essentially a very ugly Renault Clio.
Every other newish car in Tyne and Wear seems to be a Juke - lots of friends and family of Nissan Sunderland employees is probably the reason. So Fugly, chunky on the outside with the interior space of a Micra.

My works car park is littered with them now. I've never been a car snob, but I'm almost too embarrassed to park my car amongst the Joke monstrosities.

Well, to show willing I went and registered on vwroc. Not an easy task, it took numerous attempts on 3 different computers (the screen kept defaulting back to some article on the R400!). But eventually it worked and I got an acknowledgement which said I would get an email with the next steps within 10 mins max. It's now been about 3 hours and still nothing!! Doesn't bode well for the future
Have you sabotaged my registration Asker, as retaliation to my unceremonious abdication as your Matron of Honour??
-
I finally found the vwroc activation email buried in a random folder!! In Google's increasingly elaborate attempts to control my life via Gmail, it had misdirected it into some new 'promo' folder, and there was me rifling through the inbox and spam folder looking for it, how foolish of me
I long for the time when I just got emails into my inbox and was 'allowed' to sort them myself, before the big machine decided I was of sufficiently low intelligence as to need Gmail to do it for me
The evil of Google rant over!!
Back to this lovely forum.....

This is true, DSG is sometimes a little confused and disobedient (aren't we all) but with a gentle and persuasive touch it can be coaxed into behaving itself and doing as it is commanded

It's the one thing that differentiates driving an R/GTI/GTD from the experience you get when playing Need For Speed on your PS4 or XBox1.
