Title: Leak where temp sensor is located.
Post by: Jasikasisback on 01 July 2015, 11:41
I have a water leak at the temperature sensor housing at the front of the block. Strangely enough it is leaking around the bolts...the leak is really really bad on short runs (up to 5 miles) as I have to refill the expansion tank as the warning light for low water flashes..it does not do this on long runs (say 90 miles or more)..

MOT time is in about three weeks, so I don't want to put tons of money into the car to have it fail on other stuff..(like really expensive stuff.,.)

Is it a big risk to simply tighten the two bolts that hold the housing...(how much does this housing cost?)

Will radweld work as a temporary fix...for the MOT...(I have been told that radweld will seal up stuff you don't want sealing up...such as affecting the water pump)...

The car is due a cambelt/tensionere in less than 5000 miles (I drive a lot so have it done every 60,000..)

Other stuff is the coolant intake housing at the front of the block )(already mentioned)

Just wondering as the car is 20 years old now...maybe time to let it rest...but I do enjoy driving it...despite the poor fuel economy...(a new Golf owner with the bluemotion engine told me that he gets 80mpg..hard to believe...) I do a lot of highway miles...so maybe time to get a diesel mk3 automatic (they are non existent as far as I am aware...at least on the market)

How about you just replace the o-ring between flange and block for 50p?

O-ring is 36x3.15 or VW P/N 037121687

just the o ring probably wont fix it as the housings tend to crack just by the the bolt holes. it would have to be a serious leak to fail an mot. but the housings are readily available and only few quid. make sure you wirebrush head surface clean before fitting new one with a spot of silicone.

Might have a look if I still have a newish flange kicking about.... not sure I haven't thrown most of my mk3 spares away already.

Does this look like yours (ignore it has two holes for temp sender, there is a plug in one that comes with it)?
