Title: blooming car won't start! engine swap 1.3 - 1.8 on twin 40's
Post by: luiethemk2 on 15 June 2015, 00:34
hello all, I've recently done an engine swap from my wee little 1.3 to an 1.8 gti, removed the gti inlet and converted it to carbs, twin 40 webers to be exact.
the new engine works as I drove it home, it sparks, is getting fuel, turns over but won't just fire and go..

I've uprated..
red top fuel pump
malpassi filter king regulator
Sytec adjustable fuel regulator
Lucas high output coil pack
Magecor 8mm ht Leads
and standard service

so any advice that be grand :)

I bet money on ignition timing. You need the dizzy loose and to twist it back and forth as someone cranks it.

have you blocked of fuel injector ports in head? also a digi dizzy is no use as it has no mechanical advance. you need an early mk2 k-jet one or even late mk1.

I've left the injectors in, thought that would work unless you have a better idea? so would a dizzy of a 1.8 driver work?

yeah leaving the injectors in wouldn't cause an issue. yeah driver dizzy would be a step in the right direction but the gti one has a better advance curve for your engine spec.

the car should fire up with the digi dizzy but just won't rev well. you may have to turn it a fair bit with someone cranking engine to get it to fire.
