Title: Bora pick up(sold)
Post by: baker1983 on 14 June 2015, 15:06
I know it's not a mk4 golf but still the same breed!
Didn't break the Audi A8 4.2 v8 in the end, to good to strip just for the engine so now I've got a bora v5 with a knackered crank but still drives so whilst I'm hunting for the engine I'm going to chop the top off and make it into a pick up, hopefully I'll keep everyone updated on the progress to help future builds

That line you've marked, will that be cut line? How about cutting the qrtr and trunk above that and treat that as a bend line to follow the top edge of the door skin. Form the extra metal over as a lip?
Title: Re: Bora pick up
Post by: baker1983 on 18 June 2015, 20:59
I'm probably being really dumb but I'm confused about what you mean?
Do you mean cut boot and quarters higher to give me the extra metal to start the top flat area that will become the sides?

Post by: Mr_Orange on 18 June 2015, 21:53
Yes mate.  Fold that extra metal over to follow to the edge of the door skin.  I'm sure that'll give you a better finish than trying to weld and create that top lip ;)

I like your thinking! Any advice welcome
Thank you

Post by: Mr_Orange on 19 June 2015, 22:28
Same with the roof ;) Leave some extra metal to fold down and create top edge of rear panel/rear window.

Will the strength be there at the end?
Title: Re: Bora pick up
Post by: baker1983 on 30 August 2015, 22:24
Yes if not even stronger. Gonna build technically a roll bar out of 40mm box and weld it to B posts then everything will be built from that then I'll build a sort of ladder type frame out of 30mm box for the base of pickup bed but I will incorporate them into the inner arches/wheel wells again welding everything, no bolts and to top it off I'll be welding in a mk3 golf hatch back complete tailgate to B posts aswell, I've done a few measurements and I reckon the mk3 tailgate glass should look good.
Going to take some time but the rear doors are now prepped to be welded up so instantly gain strength there.
Considering some of those posh chassis braces for underneath but I'm reckoning it won't need them and they are pricey

Interesting build, I've seen a few conversions done with wagons but never a Bora. If anything the tailgate and light clusters might work better on this. Crack on fella.

Well no! Massive progress today and defo don't think I'll have any issues with chassis flexing being I've used 40mm box to build my frame

Excellent progress dude!
I see you've placed a brace across the top of that circular cover, isn't that access to the fuel pump?
Will the tailgate be fixed, or you have some magic up your sleeve to have it hinged?
Keep up the good work ;-)
Title: Re: Bora pick up
Post by: baker1983 on 21 November 2015, 08:15
The pics don't do any of that justice! The brace by the fuel pump is just back from the cover enough to remove it still.
I bought a bull tailgate net that I'm gonna make/modify it to fit then once the rest of the cars done I'll attempt a tailgate just before paint.

The road test will happen soon as I get the rear lights back in so I can drive it around my block.

Got the sides bent to shape today!
Couldn't decide wether or not to just weld them to the sides/top or put another long flat sheet over the top.
Gone with a complete flat sheet over the top I reckon, give a lot more strength

Not a clue but should be quite a bit less than original, I cut a lot of metal out! All door internals seats etc gone. A bit more welding done
Can't decide if I like the angles or not?????

I'm sure with a uniform finish they'll look pretty damn cool!

Got loads done over the last few days and nearly blew up the workshop in the process!
A bit of advice for anyone who still has a pit that's covered up don't spill petrol in it then forget about it a few days later and then start welding above it! A very nice bang with enough force to lift the car off the floor

Might be putting it up for sale soon as could do with money for my new project. Not sure what it would be worth really. All the welding will be done and cab will be water tight. Possibly needs SVA or what ever they call it now! I just told my insurance company that it was a VW bora modified into a pick up, they just added a note on file to say it's a pick up but I do have a traders policy

Maybe so...but you seem to be giving up before you're finished ...where's the fun in that?

Never said I was giving up just contemplating what to do and if it's worth me putting anymore money into it or get out when I can break even.
I'm no body shop tech and defo havnt got the patience for all the filler work so mite be a good point in the build now to sell to somebody in the paint trade.
Got all the mot advisories done today.
New front lower arms
New rear axle bushes
New coil Spring

Anyone got advice on the SVA test or small car company build?

Keep up the good work! Stay with it and could be a good opportunity to learn how to throw the filler down?
Or go rustic, strip all the paint off and clear lacquer it?.... I've been watching too many chop shop style shows on Quest! :-D

Post by: baker1983 on 12 February 2016, 18:45
I was thinking rustic! I know a mobile sand blaster that would do it for a ton.
I have done bodywork in the past but create way to much dust in my workshop for the everyday work,
I've got a couple mates giving me some quotes(cash)

Interior going back in today.going to worry about the back panel inside at a later date this whole SVA bull**** will be priority but again not sure if I want to get that deep into it money wise as ill ever see it back.
