Title: R400 at Goodwood
Post by: Wo-Wo on 13 June 2015, 19:26
Just read that the R400 will be at GFOS. Hopefully it'll be a final production model and not one of the various concepts that are kicking around the web.

I'd hazard a guess at it being one of the show cars Neil, only because they'd be more eye catching than production cars and therefore have more glamour appeal up against the new Civic Type R (Focus RS likely to be there too?)
I wonder if VW have brought it (and their other show cars) over for an extended period as GTI international is just around the corner too.

Maybe but in fairness the manufacturer has never really had a massive presence at Inters have they?

I have seen this along with a couple of other concepts on VW FB page for the FOS competition

Clever ploy, RS3 will be there which whistle getting good reviews seems to fall down on the key point for me that its not that great to drive, Type R and Focus RS likely to be there so build the hype to Frankfurt

VWUK blow hot and cold with Inters.
There have been some years where they pull all the stops out, for example, off the top of my head: when they released the 150bhp GT TDI and called it a GTI then invited a load of journos to Inters to race the 1.8t GTI and 150 TDI up the sprint, and a few years later they brought that mad W12 GTI to Inters. And other years I've been VW seem to just provide a bit of official presence with sponsorship and maybe a few loan cars for officials to use at the event.

 R400 at Inters

Just confirmed is that two top Volkswagen concept cars from Germany will be among the major attractions at this year’s GTI International...
Star attractions this year will be the sensational 190 mph Golf R 400, with 400 PS and 450 Nm of torque – plus the aggressive looks to match its huge performance – and the XL Sport two-seater sports car, powered by a 200 PS Ducati Superleggera V2 engine, with a top speed of 168 mph!
Both cars will be on display in the main Show ’n’ Shine and Concours area, sponsored by Dialynx Performance.
Don't miss this opportunity to see these sensational new VWs at first hand!

Nice one! Wonder which variant of the 400 it will be, Worthersee 2014 or the recent Nurburgring mule that's been spotted?

Have just returned from the Goodwood Moving Motor Show and here are some photos of the R400. The VW rep said they have already taken £5k deposit from buyers. Price guide somewhere between £45k to £50k

Thanks for posting up the photos DC.

I bet it looks quite striking in the flesh.

There seems to be a "who can fit the biggest air intakes" competition going on between manufacturers at the moment. Sooner or later someone is going to come out with a model that even has its headlights inside an air scoop they're getting so big!

At least it doesn't have all the weird flaps more and more BMWs are getting in their front end scoops.
I think a gynaecologist designs BMW front ends.

It's looking a bit Halfords to me - those inserts on the rear bumper serve absolutely no purpose at all, and the yellow trim bits.....I'd have preferred the "wolf in sheeps clothing" approach.

These won't be available on cheap lease deals and as a cash/PCP proposition, they're going to be beyond the means of the kind of boy racer that would appreciate those styling cues. People wanting to drop £40k on one of these is going to want it to feel a bit classy. Apart from the fugly wheels, the RS3 manages the classiness you'd expect at that pricepoint.

Price guide somewhere between £45k to £50k

For a tuned-up Golf with some bits stuck on?

Stop and think what you could get for £50k or more - these things almost always exceed their "guide prices"

Cant Justify 50k on a VW Golf. That's Madness. or must just be me.

It looks fantastic, and I can't wait to see it in the flesh on Sunday.

Interestingly, VW UK just replied to my comment on their Facebook picture of the R400, saying (quote) "The R400 is a Concept at the moment Mark, and we're not aware of any plans to produce it in the near future."  I replied to them quoting Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser's comments regarding it going into production, so we'll see if they reply to that.

It's also a bit rude of them to take deposits if there is no intention to produce the car. Anyone would think the people who told you that on the fb page were the same ones who update the pricelist and configurator on the website. Oh, wait....

They are as useless as a chocolate tea pot.  Their response to my above point was (quote): "We're not aware of any confirmed plans Mark. As soon as we hear anything however, we'll let you know, so keep posted."  To which my reply stated how strange given it was all over the press for a month now, and in addition certain UK dealers have been taking deposits.  I haven't had a reply as yet

Just got back from Goodwood myself and really disappointed with the R400 , it looked like something on the front page of Fast Car magazine , it was awful. I wouldn't pay GTI money for it. Chromed wheels , big spoilers , yellow inserts and big side skirts , come on VW surely you can do better than that , was almost as bad as the new civic type r....i was actually surprised how much better the new Focus RS looked in the flesh!

£50k???? I would rather buy a low mileage GTR with that money , what a proper piece of kit that it...overall really pleased with my GTI , best car i have owned!

Funny how opinions differ lol - I went to Goodwood yesterday and I LOVED the R400 - it looks even better in the flesh!  I've got lots of pics but no time to upload at the moment, but I will do when I get a chance.

No one was allowed to open the doors nor therefore sit in it.  However, on my second visit back to the VW stand, one of the designers of the R400 and the other concept cars was there showing a (an obviously important!) man the inside of the car - when I say inside, he opened the door and let him peer in.  Seeing the opportunity, I shoved my phone in the door to take some interior pics!  Once they'd done talking, I quickly went over and made sure I chatted to the man from Wolfsburg before he walked off, and asked him a few questions.  In a nutshell, he said that they have not been told that this is going to be built yet.  However, he confirmed the engine, chassis etc is ready to go, so once they get the green light from VW they are ready to go into production immediately.  Interestingly, he also said the production version will be toned down - he said this is just the concept (as we know), and the road car will not have as much "bling" as it were - which I would imagine most of us would expect given the current styling of the R.  Very nice man, had a good chat.

Also had a sit in the RS3 - seriously dull inside and out, made my mind up that if I want an upgrade to my R I won't be going down that route.  The new TTS however was fantastic, the dash and interior are stunning - I'd certainly consider one of those!  The worst interior however goes to the new Civic Type R - I can honestly say the centre console looked like something out of a motor from the 90's, cheap as chips plastic, really poor design - a horrible place to sit.  Was shocked at how bad it was.  Not that I'm that bothered as I would never buy one anyway!

As an aside, that's the first time I've been to Goodwood and its a brilliant day out, if you haven't been then go next year as there's so much to see!

Interesting read.

I don't think it's much surprise that any production version of the R400 will be a de-blinged version of the concept.  VW are experts at this, and for the most part thankfully so, otherwise they'd be skating dangerously close to Civic Type R and the like territory   On the other side of the coin though, it would be nice if they did produce a purist hot hatch without watering it down too much

In a nutshell, he said that they have not been told that this is going to be built yet.

They're trying to work out how many folks are willing to pay ~£50K for a Golf, I'd guess...

Seems a ridiculous sum when you could buy some serious machinery for that money... as mentioned above a low mileage GT-R, a low mileage 911, XJR-S etc.

But as you say... each to their own...

Production model is never going to look like that, I liked it but would not say in current guise its daily driver material

Interesting if VW stick with a 4 pot given then need to warrant it for 3 years and 60K and what they do with dsg version, for me this needs to be atlas capable of 70/30 rear to front split on power delivery

Consensus from a few VW people were it would be limited, we shall see

VW do not condone the deposit taking, in reality they agreed it is a bit of w!lly waving for people for forums and in the pub, chap was giving it the big I am on the VW stand abut his deposit, I did say he was obviously not a great customer to that dealership if they felt they needed to take his hard earned off him, mine refuses point blank to take money off me at the moment

Also liked the Focus RS and think that is going to be a real hoot to drive

Im really interested in seeing the reviews for the RS when they start to appear. Ive never been a Ford fan however you can't argue that 345bhp with awd for approx £30k is appealing. I also like the fact that they have toned it down slightly which will appeal to the slightly older client rather than the boy racers. Granted that the interior quality will never be as good as the VW but its still tempting

True, but there is a market for the RS3, which when specced is £50k - so I'm sure the same would be said for the R400 which I'd expect to be around the same price- and it will be quicker.

Its because its just a Golf is sort of why it appeals, £399 for 30k servicing, reasonable mpg and only 19s to have to worry about shodding, this is why the old v new debate falls flat

Yes, I wish I could have sat inside to try them out!  Tell you what Craig, I don't know if you've sat in the new TT but its stunning - I'm very tempted.  The computer dash is fantastic and the whole interior is a step up, they've done a great job on the mk 3.

I have had a seat in the new TT and it's very impressive. The dash is lovely and it is amazing when your up close to the car how distinctively different it is from the mk2. As usual with Audi though it costs a fortune and you get nothing for free. I would want the TTS but by the time you give it a decent spec your well into mid 40's. Some folk have been getting 10% discount mind you

I agree completely.  It does look totally different to the mk2, I was really impressed with it.  Have they really?  That's a great discount, particularly with Audi.  The one I sat in was in red and it was stunning!
