Title: 100 miles in and getting 39.3mpg
Post by: Diehammer on 10 June 2015, 17:28
Is it normal for it to be that low being a brand new car? I haven't been driving fast at all. It's been in sport mode all of the time. I am hoping to get at least 43mpg

Pretty much for a brand new diesel. As you get some miles on it'll get better and feel a better drive.

Oh and if it hasn't been said before, don't fanny about with it doing some grandma run in or you'll never get good mpg or performance and it's likely to use more oil.

Ours is doing late 40s a year on and doesn't see a motorway during normal commute.

Diesels are always less economical with very few miles on them. Give it a good few thousand miles to get the best economy.

Also, better quality fuels can make the car more economical too. I doubt the dealer uses premium fuels when they sell a car.

Mines 6 weeks old and 4200 miles

Now getting around 47mpg. But can't move away from sport mode

Far too early to start worrying about mpg with just 100 miles on the clock.

Even the tyres wil not be run in for a few hundred miles ...

Give it a few thousand miles on the diesel engine, at least, to start getting a better idea of real fuel consumption

From my experience (seven TDIs ) it takes about 20k miles+ before they loosen up.

Don't get Me wrong it's good performance from a powerful diesel it's just a few years since I had a brand new car.

Sport mode is great need to look at the aircon setup next

I currently drive an Ovtavia vRS (getting GTI 3 weeks today) and after 3000miles it settled and i now get 52mpg and it's the very same engine as the GTD.

First 3 tank fulls on mine struggled to get around 40mpg. Now easily get 45-55mpg dependent on weather.

What type of journeys are you doing?

Depends heavily on the journey. If you do less than 5 miles a journey and are relatively soft on the car then you'll be lucky to crack 40mpg (35mpg if driving it a little harder). Do a 100 mile journey at a constant 80mph and you'll crack 55mpg. The latest gen TDIs take an age to warm up (oil temp), affecting the mpg massively when cold.

Never seen significant mpg gains as the miles roll on with 7 TDIs bought from new. With the weather we've had lately, the mpg will be getting a helping hand (you'd be really disappointed if running in the car during winter).

If I get that on my R I'll be well happy. That's what I get on my current GTI most of the time. Occasionally it nudges into the heady heights of 30+

proud of my 6.9mpg average on the R for half a tank, when the warning light came on it predicted the range at 10 miles

31.5mpg for me today on my way home, with the aircon on, doing 80 when traffic flow would allow, and I think i'd have probably got more on Shell V-Power rather than Esso Supreme.

Would have been an easy 52mpg in the GTD.

That's pretty good going for a new R.

I usually use Shell V Power but sometimes have to slum it with Esso 97ron as the nearest Shell garage is 7 miles away.  I do find it seems smoother on Shell.  But tbh I'm really not fussed about the mpg. If it's somewhere in the 20's that'll do.

How many miles you got on the clock now?  And how is it with the Soundaktor turned down?  Better?

My journeys so far have all been around 5 miles from cold all in 30-40 limits with plenty of traffic which hasn't helped. I did do a test on my bmw before i sold it and was getting around the same mpg on the same journeys and it had 40000 on the clock, over a full month i was getting 42.8mpg.

I think my big problem will be getting used to the tiny 50 litre tank and i am driving to Alton Towers next week which will be a 554 mile round trip.

I'm probably just over 500 miles now, but unlikely to be using Esso again if I can help it. Have you tried Tesco Momentum 99? Soundaktor down to 30% makes the car a canny bit quieter - the fakery enhances the real engine note subtly, and I can hear what the car is actually doing all the time. I suppose it sounds like unaltered "Normal" in Race at 30%, Happy with that.

Not sure if i'm liking the new job TBH, lots of issues, but my hands are tied to help sort them out - it'll be a challenge.

Not tried Tesco M 99 - Tesco is also 7 miles away.  Canterbury is very poor for decent petrol stations, but I get out and about a lot with work so plan my fill ups at Shell to coincide with site trips.  It's amazing how often I need to go to Whitstable on work business

Actually looking forward to hearing the soundaktor for myself, wonder if it will end up getting turned down or off too?

Was going to ask how your new job was going. Early days I guess, hopefully it'll improve as time goes on.

I have used momentum, again I find it similar to ease supreme. Car doesn't seem as eager and doesn't seem to be as smooth. I'll be sticking to V Power nitro me thinks

That's exactly what I've got as a long term mpg after 10k miles - which is pretty good I think!

MPG is not the really what the R is about though is it.  Thankfully there's a choice - GTD anyone?

Or a Golf GTI - better on fuel than an R and runs on 95 RON which is cheaper than both Diesel and 98RON.  :smug:

277 mile drive to Alton Towers today after filling it up to the absolute maximum & it's sitting between half and the next big line between 3/4 checked the computer and it says I have 270 miles left and was averaging 50.4 mpg on my journey down. Either the computer or the gauge must be wrong. I put 18.5 litres of diesel in before I left this morning so I am guessing that it is the gauge.
