On the GTD, when I was down to about 45 miles range, I would get the fill-up reminder, but i'm down to 30 miles range on the R and no warnings as yet.
Is this something to do with the R having a bigger tank (55L vs 50), like it gets to zero miles before telling you to fill up because that is the point at which the car starts to dip into the last 5L?
As far as the needle position on the fuel gauge goes, it is exactly on the bit where the white tails off into the fine part of the start of the red zone. It looks like the R has a bigger red zone on the gauge than the GTD does (presumably because it does fewer mpg).

I thought the red zone was for a gallon of fuel. So would be 45miles in the GTD where as the R will be 25-30. Mine kicked over today at 30mpg

Maybe i'm 200yards away from a low fuel warning and this thread was for nothing!

Interestingly how many miles did you get out of a tank? I got 300miles out of this one

My GTI usually gets down to 30 miles range before the fuel light comes on

I'll let you know later today when I fill up, it's somewhere close to 300 miles right now with 30 miles left on the range and no warning as yet. I'm guessing it'll have been around 320 miles to zero.
Meeting mcmaddy later for a bit of VCDS tweakery (knocking the Soundaktor down to 30 or 40%). Any other tweak suggestions?

I always fill when it gets down to 1/4..

My favourite one is the full rear brake lights, tweak it so that the whole light cluster lights on braking.
Others...
- fan speed on the climate when in auto
- puddle lights to remain on when mirrors fold
- alarm chirp on lock/unlock
- Increase DRL brightness
Probably loads of others I can't think of.

If the low fuel warning light is triggered on the fuel amount remaining then it will be different in terms of remaining range on R, GTI and GTD due to their different consumption rates. Mine (a GTD) comes on at around 45 miles to go.
-
I was wondering if the R having an extra 5L tank capacity made it behave differently. In all honesty, i'd expect the 3 cars to be calibrated slightly differently on remaining fuel, so they gave a common number of miles remaining on the low fuel warning.
Anyway, as predicted, 100 yards into my journey to meet up with Chris (mcmaddy), the light came on - 30 miles left on the range. I got down past Sunderland and Chris set to work with the changes:-
Soundaktor down to 30%. It's now sounding in Race mode like 100% is for Normal mode. I prefer it this way - enhancing the natural engine sound rather than drowning it out completely. There's something a little unnerving about not being able to hear what is going on with the engine as you're driving it (especially during the running in period).
Coming home lights activating automatically, without a high beam flash.
Volume (Gallons) required to refill.
Had a quick blast up one junction of the A19 and back again with Chris, just to try the soundaktor out at it's new setting.
Then I filled up on the way home, around 10 miles into "0 miles". The car took 53.32L (11.64 Gallons) to do 321.2 miles = 27.6mpg for its first fill - with Shell Nitro + (computer read 28.9mpg "since fill").
Feeling a little wary of having dipped 10 miles into "0 miles", I decided not to chance driving on to the nearest Shell garage, so thought i'd try out Esso Supreme and see what that does for me - might not be a fair comparison, as next week in my new job, my commute is going to double,so i'm expecting slightly better mpg if there are no extra opportunities to put my foot down, and the further running in of the car might also take effect.

Monkeyhanger, your not still putting fuel in multiples of £3 a time are you?

Not any more!

Does it not say in the manual what quantity of fuel is left when it warns you. Use to be something like 5 or 7ltrs with older VWs

Good luck in your new job.

OK, it's still mpg related, something weird with the MFD.
After filling up with Esso Supreme last night and driving literally a mile home with around 35mpg displayed "since fill" when I got home, and today we went to the Metrocentre and back (16 miles each way).
On the way there, the car's mpg progress along the journey seemed to lag significantly behind that expected with my Shell fill up. Getting onto the dual carriageway, i'm usually up to about 22mpg and it was around 19mpg. As the miles rolled on in the journey, the car seemed to be around 3mpg behind expectations at every point (for the first half of the journey, which is the same route as my commute). When we got there, the car was reading 26.2mpg for the journey - the journey is a little longer than my commute, so I expected slightly better than the 29mpg i'd been getting on the commute.
I did wonder whether a change in fuel brand on the fill-up had prompted the car making tweaks to "learn" the best setting tweaks for that fuel (I found a similar thing happened with the GTD when switching between Esso and BP), and maybe it would take 20 or 30 miles to learn to make the most of what it had.
Anyway, we were in the Metrocentre a good 4 hours (watched the new Mad Max film and did a bit of shopping), so all the journey data will have been reset when I jumped back in the car. Drove home and the car said it did 28.8mpg for the trip.
So what did the "since refuel" mpg read? 29.1mpg. By my calculations, 1.5 miles @35mpg + 16 miles @ 26.2mpg + 16 miles @28.8mpg = a total mpg over the 33.5 miles since fill to be 27.7mpg.
The way the range read (340 miles left after 33.5 miles done in since fill) correlates with early indications given by the car for my first tank (Shell V-power) of around 370 miles for the tank.
The range and "since fill" mpg seem to tally at around an indicated 29mpg, slightly at odds with the "since start" mpg readings for each of the 3 independent trips.
Definitely overthinking it here, but that's because i'm trying to establish whether Esso is noticeably better or worse than Shell for the R. Today the car seemed a little less lively with Esso than it had been with Shell (again it could be that "learning process" with a change in fuel).

Definitely overthinking it here....
I think you might be :D

I notice the subtle things, it's a curse sometimes.
I'd expect the "since refuel" mpg calculation to be based upon accurate accumulative "since start" mpg readings. It seems as though the 2 readings are independently worked out, and it would make sense for the "since refuel" figure to be closer to reality and therefore more trustworthy.
